Adenard the Wise

Master Adenard (a.k.a. The Wise)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Right leg twisted and weak, with a long, never healing wound running from calf to shin.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Adenard was born during the height of the Epoch of Peril, spending most of his life in constant peril and struggling to survive. Due to physical weakness, caused by an injury sustained early in life, Adenard had to rely on his own intelligence and the help of other people to survive. He slowly and carefully built up a secret community in the mountains, acting as de facto leader, though refusing to take any official title, and often relying on the advice of several trusted members. As de facto leader, he was forced to walk a fine line between charity and pragmatism, leading to his saving many lives, but also having to shut out others in order to avoid being discovered. These choices would haunt him for the rest of his life.    After the Voidgate was closed, Adenard and his community became leaders in the efforts to bring back civilization, and the aged man's wisdom was valued by many. Adenard was among the most vocal critics of the mages, seeing their greed as the leading cause of the devastation wreaked upon mortals for the last 1700 years, and he worked long and hard to come up with restrictions upon magic experiments and pursuits. His writings and speeches on the subject have been controversial among magic users, to say the least, but they are still required reading in schools of magic to this day.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Creator and de facto leader of The Hidden Garden, leading to the survival and flourishing of many during the Epoch of Peril.    Vocal leader and wise man who helped to rekindle the fires of civilization after the destruction of the Voidgate.   Author of several treatises on subjects ranging from ethics for leaders, to charity vs survival, to ethical restrictions for magic users.   Founder of the Grey Halls, and the Order of Wisdom.

Morality & Philosophy

Charity and Community. One must do their best to help others survive, unless by inaction one improves the chances of a greater number surviving. One should put the survival of the community before the safety of oneself.    Responsibility. One must take responsibility for one's actions. Only by owning up to one's mistakes can one grow past them to become a better person.    Personal Restraint. One must be able to control oneself if one is to best serve their community.    Wisdom in Knowledge. One must be able to discern between usable knowledge and that which is forbidden to men. Knowledge brings prosperity and happiness. But forbidden knowledge brings pain and misery to all.

Social

Speech

Was noted for his soft, quiet tone of voice. He was never recorded as having raised his voice in anger.
