The Fox Drakes

These dragons grow no bigger than a fox or a cat. Each are guardians of a Virtue that governs magic, and now and then they choose someone to help them with this task, as well as teach them of that Virtue of Magic.   Unlike Minor Dragons, Fox Drakes can't breathe fire, but they are connected to the magic they govern. For instance, Daydream is the Guardian of Dreams, so he's able to project dreams into water for others to witness the dream as well.

  • Genetics and Reproduction

When a Fox Drake fines a mate, they mate for life, feeling the magic in each other as compliments to their own. A female Fox drake will have heat cycles only once a year, and will only mate with her chosen mate. one month after mating, the female will lay a single egg, which will in turn take another two months before the egg hatches.  Some Clans have communal nesting den, usually a small cave or under a tree to protect all the eggs, each female having a nest of her own to watch over her egg and not feel lonely as other mothers prepare to lay their eggs and watch over the laid eggs.  While the female is on Egg Watch, the Males will collect food and bring water to his mate, and sometimes take over Egg Watch so the female can get up and stretch.

    Growth Rate & Stages

  • 1 month 'pregnancy' for the Female
  • 2 months after laying; the Egg hatches. Hatchlings are delicate and vulnerable after hatching. Wings are crumpled up and small. Drakes being hand raised need a Formula to encourage healthy growth.
  • 1 week old; The wings are fully developed, and hatchling is getting used to their legs
  • 3 weeks old; hatchlings are up and about, playing with other hatchlings, too young to leave the Den.
  • 1 month old; hatchlings are able to travel to the parents den.
  • 4 months old; Starting to figure out their wings.
  • 7 months old; practicing stalking 'prey', such as leaves, berries, bugs, and fish.
  • 9 months old; joining parents on hunting parties, or foraging outings.
  • 1 year old; reaches the Juvenile stage
  • 1 1/2 years old; Learns what they're guardian of and how to use the magic associated with the Guardianship.
  • 2 years old; Young Adolescent, perfecting their skills with magic.
  • 3 years old; Adult.
  • Ecology and Habitats

Depends on each clan and what element they usually associate with.

    Dietary Needs and Habits

Depending on where the Drakes live, Drakes usually hunt small game such as mice, frogs, and fish. They also forage for edible roots, plants, and berries. There are some with Keepers that enjoy partaking in cooked foods. One Keeper that was a sailor claims his Drake, a guardian of Empathy, greatly enjoyed Sushi and savored the rice and fish.

    Biological Cycle

  • Spring; Young Drakes are either looking for females to court, or mated pairs enjoy each others company. Youngsters experience first 'sheds', shedding fur and scales.
  • Summer; Females are usually laid up with an egg, so the Males take on the majority of hunting and foraging. Youngsters play and explore their world.
  • Fall; New mothers are caring for their young, some are even bringing their hatchlings to the Family Dens. Youngsters experience their fur and scales growing thick for winter, at least those that live in places that experience winter. Males start stockpiling food for winter.
  • Winter; Drakes more or less hibernate, sleeping together in the Community Den where the Eggs are usually laid in order to keep warm. Those in warmer climates experience a second (If cooler) Summer Cycle.
  • Behaviour

These small omnivores are very intelligent. Once bonded to a Keeper, they communicate Telepathically to their Keeper and other Keepers as well.    The Fox Drakes follow a Monarchy more or less; they have a Lead Male and Lead Female that takes care of the clans needs, thought it's the Female that usually is the upmost leader. When the time comes for a new Leader to take her place, the 'Queen' will choose a successor.

The Care and Keeping of a Fox Drake Egg in need
    If you have found a Fox Drake Egg that isn't in a nest, but there is life in it yet, first find the nearest Fox Drake Clan to return the Egg. If this isn't possible, then you have become an Honorary Keeper.   The Egg will have to be kept warm, it's best to use an incubator, or to keep by a warm fire.   When the Egg Hatches, the hatchling will be small and frail. Without the Clan to feed it, it runs the risk of not having the nutrients he needs to survive. This Formula is the closest one can come to a substitute for what the Fox Drakes feed their young;
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • warm and mix ingredients on a stove, allow to cool so it won't burn the Hatchling as it eats. Feed via bottle or via spoon or dish. A bottle works best.   Keep the Hatchling close; allow to sit on shoulders, or be close. Knowing someone is there will help the hatchlings development a lot.
