The Guardians
Now on to the Guardians. This is all that I know of this complex and mysterious subject.
As I understand it, the Guardians are like paragons of each of the colours. According to what Kairine has told me, they are directly connected to the Flow in a way no one else is. They also always precede the Traveler, a chosen one of sorts. Someone born with the ability to control all of the controls, including power over time and space itself. Dark days are coming indeed, as Kuai keeps saying. You should listen to her. She knows a lot more than she lets on. She is very wise.
According to legend, there are nine Guardians, one for each colour or even sub-colour. Crystal is the Guardian of Element-Flame. Eira is the Guardian of Water-Frost. Kuai is the Guardian of Earth. One of our fellow investigators, Evelyn, is the Guardian of Spirit. When will the rest appear?
So Bifrost is correct about Crystal, Kuai, Eira, and Evelyn. However now the rest of the Guardians have appeared.
Sometime after my arrival, in one of our trips to an ancient ruins somewhere in Almahna, it was revealed that I am the Guardian of Wind. To be honest, I'm still getting used to the idea. Later, after we met Deanna, we learned that she is the Guardian of Water. Not even Crystal knew. It was a big surprise to everyone.
Luna, Eira's mother, is the Guardian of Darkness. Fleur Aurora-Ariann is the Guardian of Storm.
Now for the part that blew everyone's mind. To be honest I'm still coming to terms with this one too, but you get used to that feeling. But we should back up first.
In Evergreen City, at the library there, we found an old ancient tapestry which told the story of how the Guardians and the Traveler came to be. Let's see if I can tell that story now without butchering it.
In ancient times there was an highly advanced civilization that once lived here. We can still find their remnants around. They were called the Alchenon, but over the centuries their name was butchered to the Alchemists. There was a great civil war amongst them, that nearly destroyed the world and nearly wiped out the other people of the world. So the Alchemists left this world. But a few remained. They traveled around the world, helping the other people of the world rebuild and passing along their knowledge of Mystia and of Mystimon, teaching people how to weave Mystia and to Imprint and summon Mystimon.
When their task was finished, they left behind their rainbow dragon, and gifted nine individuals with great power over their respective colours, creating the Guardians, promising that they would some day return, in times of great need.
Now as I understand it, the Guardians are all women, for a reason unbeknownst to any of us. And when they promised they would return, they were speaking of one like them who could wield all the colours.
The rainbow dragon is thought to have been the fuzion form of the ten Dragon Lords, and in fact we have now learned that we, the Guardians, actually have a mysterious connection to the Dragon Lords.
But as Deanna explained, there is supposed to be an exact order that the Guardians awaken in. Light is supposed to be first, and Darkness last. I know, I know, but stay with me. Deanna makes some sense. Sometimes. The truth is, how the Guardian of Light was revealed still has us all scratching our heads. Because according to Deanna, according to Kairine, it's never happened before. Something changed this time.
Because somehow, someway, the Guardian of Light. . . is Kuai. She is both the Guardian of Earth and Light. And none of us can figure out how this happened. Or whether she will be able to even maintain this much power indefinitely. Already, she appears to be using Eira as a sort of ground, and offloads some of the power into her, so they're sharing the load. But none of us are sure if this is sustainable at all.
Deanna's theory of how this happened has to do with one rule about the Guardians. That if they die, the power simply passes to another and they reincarnate.
Now I must tell Kuai's tragic past. . . Then you will understand Deanna's theory.
When Kuai was seven years old, she traveled with her parents on a ship from the Quatrica Islands to Atlantea. But there was a. . . bad man as Kuai so rightfully describes him on the ship at the same time. Xulgoth. And he preyed upon her, a defenceless child, and manipulated her into setting a fire. At the same time, also on the ship, Deanna believes the Guardian of Light was also there. And her theory is that Kuai's Earth Guardian powers awakened that very night, at the same time the person who was the Guardian of Light was murdered by Xulgoth, and that in that instant, the Light Guardian powers fused with Kuai instead of passing to someone else.
We've also discovered than in a weird coincidence, each and every one of us had actually been in the Quatrica Islands at the same time. We still have to make a trip there. In the hopes we might be able to find out more. The Mystery of the Guardians only deepens.
You can believe Deanna's theory. Or you can believe whatever you want to believe. None of us really knows how any of this happened. We may completely misunderstand everything about the Guardians, and about the Traveler. It's all a mystery as much to us as it is to you. I have only told you the facts as we understand them. Formulate your own hypothesis.
