The Sire of Deep Sleep
When you go to sleep, there are multiple stages of sleep that you go through. First you arrive in the Awakening, this is a plane somewhere in between the Dream Lands and the material plane. From here you travel to either the Dreamscape or the Nightmare Realm. Where you go is determined by this Mystimon, Darcore, also known as the Sire of Deep Sleep.
Darcore has been described by dreamers for generations, but never fully documented due to the difficulty in traveling to the Dream Lands or even to the Awakening. But in the words of Doctor Ivan Sanderson, "The balance between the Dreamscape and Nightmare Realm is so fine that it would not be surprising, in fact it would be expected, that some such creature would take the place of maintaining this fine balance."
Darcore is described as being a floating black shadowy mass with azure coloured eyes, long shadowy arms and legs, with a dark purplish belt around its waist, and its head ovular shaped with purple smokey 'hair' emanating from the top of its head.
One incredible facet about it is that it is said to be sapient and able to speak.
So the next time you have a nightmare, blame Darcore. But not too much. Its job is a delicate one, and an important one. If not for Darcore, the Dream Lands would be at war with one another. It's simply doing its job.

Indeed, there must be a very fine balance between the Dream Lands, that a being such as this must exist to maintain it. It is only a matter of proving its existence. To travel to the Dream Lands would indeed be a fascinating endeavor, I wish only that I had the time."
