Anaom

Swift as a river's current, this friendly aquatic arthropod is a favorite companion of the Lemouille.

Basic Information

Anatomy

This docile insect-like animal lives beneath the water on lake-beds, sea-beds and the rivers connecting the two. Their flat structures are perfectly aerodynamic allowing them to march or even swim through strong currents with ease. Being such friendly creatures, they are often domesticated by Lemouillites and used as travel companions fro long trips. Their heads have been addressed as unseemly by some and adorable by others. The head itself is small compared to their body. Its mouth is located underneath what may be considered its chin. The tip of their face is adorned with two highly flexible tentacle-like appendages covered in tiny hairs on the underside. They use these to grasp at the surrounding vegetation and even drag whatever they catch to their mouths. This allows them to quickly munch without need to stop. Directly above their two mustachioed limbs, a set of minuscule eyes are found which are believed to grant them excellent thermal sight. Meanwhile, they have a second pair of large protruding and spherical eyes on each side of its face most likely used as their primary source of vision. Next, above and bellow the protruding eyes, yet another pair of appendages much like whiskers extend out from the Anaom. The pair found above are short and reach just beyond the thicker tentacles found at the tip of the face, meanwhile the pair found beneath are much longer and bend backwards. All the surrounding areas connected to limbs and appendages are soft and flexible. These sections are all covered in a thin plated exoskeleton. Moving on to its body, the animal consists almost entirely of an oval segmented body. Each segment allows the Anaom an impressive degree of motion. On each side, small fins grow outward and match the size of the segment it is connected to. These fins move in a wave in addition to its entire body while the Anaom swims. Underneath its carapace, a pair of 100 tiny pointed feet runs all along the length of animal along it to move swiftly on the ground both above and under water. Finally, its tail resembles the rest of the Anaom's body, however it does become progressively thinner as it reaches the tip. Additionally, at the tip of the tail, a group of large fins extend outward.

Genetics and Reproduction

The Anaom, are egg layers with an interesting quality. Female Anaom have a special membrane akin to fur lining the under-portion of their tails. When comes time to produce their eggs, they will get caught in this membrane where they will stay until they hatch.

Growth Rate & Stages

An Anaom egg will tend to stick to its mother's membrane for two months. Once they hatch, the newborn Anaoms begin to swim for food, never straying to far from their mother. By the sixth month, Anaom have entered a cross between infancy and adolescence. They have already become independent but remain close in a sort of familial unit. By the end of the 1st year, Anaom are already considered adults and will slowly move beyond their familiar grounds. The Anaom continues to grow and once they've reached their 3rd year, they can usually support one adult sized Lemouillite on its back. Anaoms are considered fully grown by the end of their 10th year or when two Lemouillites can comfortably sit on their backs.

Ecology and Habitats

Anaoms are aquatic animals. They are found all over the Heindenselm Region's Great lake Gracelyn. They are also found in many of the rivers connecting the Regions of Heindenselm, Heinddur, Middterh, Senholdo and Beaukudo.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The bottom feeders ingest a large amount of vegetation both above and underwater.

Additional Information

Domestication

The Anaoms are often domesticated by the Lemouillites. Families will sometimes take one in as an infant and raise it as a pet within their own homes. Once they grow too old, they must be set free but, the bond built over the years ensures that no matter the distance or the time spent apart, a Lemouillite and their Anaom will recognize each other in a second.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Anaoms, though they are amphibious, need water to survive. Additionally, since these animals can grow to reach nearly three metres in length, they thrive in large bodies of water. For this reason, they are mostly found within the Great lake Gracelyn of the Heindenselm Region and the sea of the Beaukudo Region.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Anaom uses its tiny front facing eyes to identify what lies ahead by reading thermal patterns. Meanwhile, it uses its front facing whiskers as well as the longer back facing whiskers to feel for its surroundings. Lastly, the two larger eyes on each side of its head are able to see all around its body for potential predators.
