The Forsaken
The Forsaken are a race of partially undead humanoids that live in the cracks of kingdoms and underground refuges often called the Darklands. These creatures were originally created as a partially living undead (similar to Dhampir) by a quasi-deific lich to serve as his personal five-hundred strong army. Eventually they rebelled against their lord, but having known nothing but suffering and death their entire existence, they formed a warrior culture down in the dark depths of the earth. Learning from their undead lord, they learned to Necrograft, which is to graft the organs and body parts from undead onto the living, granting them unnatural strength and power. The Forsaken began to refer to themselves as a “hive” and became well known to the powerful races on the material plane. Their culture of fighting and killing the horrible monsters of the Darklands and surface granted great interest to those who sought mercenaries. Once The Forsaken became better established, kings, queens, emperors, and other people with great wealth and power would secretly, nefariously offer them gifts and luxuries from the surface in exchange for them serving them in tyrannical wars. They were small but extremely hardened regiments of lethal soldiers that could turn the tides of a battle and disappear just as quickly.
Physical Description: While the Forsaken share color variations, they have no single standard description of how they appear. While they at the base have a relatively standard humanoid appearance, they are known to take on qualities and adaptions from their Necrograft that create diversity in their appearances. For example, a weaver may give herself more arms to make her job easier. A fighter may graft an additional leg, giving them advantage against tripping. The Forsaken are very unlikely to graft qualities for aesthetics, using this skill is reserved for practical use. If horns, longer ears, or similar appearances are added, this is likely to assist with blending into existing races.
They have skin tones varying between purple-grey to off gray. Hair color can vary but typically loses color over time due to age and graftings. Their eye colors vary, but like the hair, will shift color for similar reasons. Typically, the sclera turns black while the irises may loose their vibrancy.
Society: Regiments of soldiers are filled with Soldiery, the colloquial name for men in the race. Males are generally tough and have numerous necrografted limbs and other body parts to make them physically stronger. Grafters is the colloquial name for women in the race, who are often physically weaker but much better at communication and high skill tasks, usually taking roles that create for the armies and run hives and have less necrografts. Finally, Harbingers are the nobility class, serving as generals or queens. They are typically (though not always) female and are given superior bodies and minds by their Lucerna Vitae and therefore only require necrografted organs, making them the perfect specimen among The Forsaken.
The Forsaken worship a sacred artifact called the Lucerna Vitae (Necril for Candle of Life) which is a candle that was crafted by the first Forsaken out of the wax idol that used to be their creator's phylactery. The candle is massive, over 7 feet tall and several hundred pounds, with a small wick. Newborn Forsaken are anointed with a drop of the candle's wax. A part of their souls are trapped within and, when they die, they are returned to the candle, raised as undead, then their bodies are used for necrografting. Harbingers are typically kept as sentient undead thralls overseeing war councils and offering insight before their undead forms eventually fail them. The next Forsaken to be anointed with the wax is said to be imbued with the soul of the last dead, a slightly perverted form of reincarnation.
Relations: The Foresaken have no allies with the living species. They are actively hunted down by such, mainly Lupin or adventurers. Their society, if given any allyship, may work with other undead lords or evil aligned living monarchs and leaders who use
