Khettadine

Overview

The Khettadine are the founder species of the United Sovereignties of Khetta.

Biology and Appearance

Physiology

The Khettadine are mustelids, originating from the verdant jungles and forests of Khetta.   They have two legs, two arms (ending in hands of four fingers and an opposable thumb), and a furry tail (in which they almost universally take great pride) that they use for balance while running swiftly along tree branches.

Physical Variations

There are multiple races of Khetts spread across the world in many different environments, with slightly different characteristics from place to place.   The most visibly obvious difference is fur color, but fur density is another common distinguishing characteristic. For example, Khetts in the southern mountains have extremely dense fur and a very warm undercoat, while the Greater Shoreborne have an outer layer of long, coarse guard hairs which does a better job of keeping them dry when in the water, and the Northern Khettadine have very short, coarse fur, better suited to their warmer climate.   Fur colors range from white to black, with a variety of tans, browns, and even reds intermixed, and many patterns of various colors, often as a result of racial intermixing.   The Mountain Khettadine mostly have white or cream fur, with some dark brown specimens, while the Central Khettadine predominately feature various shades of brown and red. The Northern Khettadine are mostly a light tan color, and the Greater and Lesser Shoreborne are predominately dark brown or black.   Additionally, the Shoreborne have webbed rear paws.   There is a distinctive dimorphism between males and females, with males on average being longer and much bulkier, albeit only bulky by Khettadine standards. Females are much more uniformly slender, especially in their facial features, and often sleeker, although the latter quality is typically attributed to even more meticulous grooming, for which there is now a ludicrous array of products.

Society and Culture

Societal Structure

While the structure of their society varies between ethnicity, there are a few common threads, one being significant commitment to civic responsibility.   The smallest municipal authority is called a warren, a communal sort of housing with as many as seventy-five denizens, not all necessarily of the same family. Each designates a council of roughly one-tenth the adult population, with one member chosen to preside as warren manager. These authorities resolve disputes and ensure that the warren runs smoothly, as well as plan for the future and bring proposals to the population as a whole to vote on.   Due to the requirement that a warren manager be in the warren almost constantly and the job's nature as an unpaid volunteer position, it is usually filled by a mother—often one with grown children—or by an elder male who has retired.   Most warrens are composed of people of roughly the same station in life, and thus significant disparities exist between the more affluent members of society and the poor. However, because a large amount of personal space is not typically considered important, affluent warrens are usually not as dramatically more expensive than the mean as many affluent homes would be in other cultures. Therefore, affluent Khettadine often fund warren constructions for the less well-off, usually naming the buildings after themselves. Thus, the "show piece" is not their own warren, which many cooperated on, but the warren for which they were solely responsible.

Family Structure

Khetts mate monogamously and for life, raising their children together. Absent exigent circumstances, it is very rare for a wedded couple to move, although adult Khetts who have not yet married typically leave the warren they grew up in and find a new one. The exception is the eldest child, who is expected to stay and care for his or her aging parents, and if married by the time of their death, to take their place in the warren.   Heredity is widely considered very important, with most traditions placing the firstborn (of either sex) as the sole heir (unless passed over by the parents or supplanted by circumstance), which comes with significant responsibilities to siblings and parents. However, that was and is often only ever practiced among the upper classes. Many tales were written of a dedicated Khettadine caring for his aging parents at the cost of a chance at love or adventure, with older iterations showing it as a noble sacrifice while many of the more contemporary works show it in a much more negative light.   Those inclinations, however, do hold true in parental care, at least. With the exceptions of dysfunctional families and irresponsible youth, the eldest typically will remain to care for its parents.

Khettadine in the Cluster

Due to their intensely communal nature, they are often viewed with some trepidation by other species with greater desire for personal space, and few are willing to adopt their claustrophobia-inducing housing arrangements and the corresponding lack of privacy.   Thus, Khetts typically gather together wherever enough of them exist, meaning that many worlds may seem almost entirely devoid of Khettadine except for a few cities with large, concentrated populations.   That aside, their qualities are often welcomed, but unfortunately, one of those qualities is a valuable pelt that fetches high prices on the black market. More than a few have been murdered for their fur, with more isolated settlements sometimes being utterly wiped out, especially in more hostile nations.   This leads to some ethnic conflict on various worlds, with Khettadine militias taking up arms to defend their settlements and coming into conflict with surrounding population centers and governments who may or may not actually be complicit in the acts that prompted the militias to rise in the first place.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Endoskeletal biped, possessing two arms. Legs end in paws with four toes and a dewclaw. Each digital pad is actually elongated, allowing some rudimentary finger-like gripping. Each arm ends in a full hand with very tough paw-like "palms" and four fingers and a thumb, each with a sharp claw. Most non-aboreal Khettadine trim these since they are not needed, but some retain them as a primitive self-defense weapon.   They have long arms and legs, a very long body, and a tail half again as long. Because they are so slender, they seem very tall even though they are somewhat shorter than the clusteral average.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mammalian.
Females give birth to broods of 2-4 kits at a time, after approximately nine months of gestation.   Due to the long gestational period, most kits are born with fur and with their eyes open, although premature or induced labor can mean that the kit has not fully developed fur or opened its eyes by the time it is born.

Growth Rate & Stages

Infant: 0-3 months
Toddler: 0.25-1 years
Child: 2-6 years
Young Adult: 7-10 years
Adult: 11-35 years
Middle Aged: 36-50 years
Old: 51-65 years
Venerable: 66+   Legal adult according to prevailing law in the United Sovereignties of Khetta: 13 or 14   Young Khettadine grow and mature very rapidly, so most of their education takes place after they have reached adulthood. This leads to an inter-developmental stage from the age of about ten until they are generally about sixteen where they are often very wild; unintended pregnancies are a common occurence among this age bracket. However, due to the structure of the warrens, such a happening is not as difficult to handle as in many other cultures since there are so many close adults to assist.

Ecology and Habitats

Khettadine are very adaptable, and multiple races are genetically suited to specific environments.   However, Khettadine society began in the deep forests and jungles and so even subspecies that haven't lived in forested habitats for generations still exhibit certain traits that make them naturally suited to such environs.   In the forests and jungles, they often built homes high in the branches or tunneled into and around the roots of the trees, while in the deserts, homes were usually built into the ground, with just a part of the building peeking above the sand. In the modern age, sprawling metropolises are commonplace, often seamlessly integrated with the surrounding environment.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Khettadine diet runs the gamut from fruit to fish to fowl and everything in between. They have always excelled at eating whatever was placed in front of them, leading many species not blessed with such a high metabolism to wonder how they maintain their svelte figures.   Methods of farming, hunting, and gathering are as varied as the sources of food, but all food is bundled to the warren's communal food store where it is carefully managed by the warren council.   Khettadine meals are renowned for their variety and quality, although this view is somewhat narrow: While it is true that culturally, such feasts and meals are greatly prized, many are constrained by wealth and unable to afford such extravagance. What is true, however, is that even a few ingredients can be used to form meals of tremendous variety thanks to the endless culinary creativity of the Khettadine, which they have taken great pains to document over the eons.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Khettadine heads taper to a slender muzzle, with the taper shape ranging from a slightly concave arc to one that is subtly convex, although the latter is far more common. The nose sits at the terminus of the muzzle, flush with both the end and the top of the muzzle. Muzzles often features stripes, typically either one down the center of the muzzle or twin stripes on either side of the muzzle. Rarely, one along the throat and underneath the chin.   The ears take the form of two small triangles, perched atop the cranium and naturally angled opposite directions, although their angle can be adjusted to improve directional hearing.   The two beady eyes are centered on the head, providing excellent forward vision, but lacking peripheral vision when compared to species with eyes placed more on the sides of the head.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Khettadine originally came from the equatorial jungles and forests that covered much of Khetta's second-largest continent, but very quickly spread out across the rest of the planet through banishment, exploration, colonization, and simple expansion.   With always some contingent firmly believing they could live anywhere, only the polar caps were deemed too inhospitable for settlements. Settlements, cities, and soon nations sprung up across the world, on every major continent and across many islands, some so small as to challenge such classification.   The heartland, however, remains the central jungles, and that has always been a point of contention between the various peoplegroups. All can trace their origins back there, but they have been dominated primarily by a single ethnic group for millennia. As that is unlikely to change, the other cultures are often left feeling alienated from their birthplace, even though they can theoretically return whenever they want.
