Vampire
I guess you could say we "ruled the night" at one point. But, I dunno, I guess the wolves caught us by surprise? I don't remember a time when we weren't fighting just for survival. How were we supposed to strike fear into others when we were always afraid ourselves?
Basic Information
Anatomy
Usually appears human but with red eyes and fangs.
Biological Traits
A vampire, in its true form, is a mass of gray smoke with a magical core that acts as its "brain." Feeding on blood maintains its physical form, allowing it to shapeshift and appear humanoid, and feeding on fear maintains the magical core.
When a vampire dies, the smoke particles solidify and settle lifelessly on the ground. Humans often mistake it for ash.
Weaknesses
Vampires are immortal; they can't die from old age, disease, or most traditional means of death. They are only vulnerable to four things:- Sunlight: Sunlight can burn through a vampire's physical form and destroy its magical core in minutes.
- Wooden Stakes: A vampire's physical form can be instantly destroyed by that which was once living. The most popular material for anti-vampire weapons is wood, but other dead things like bone work as well.
- Religious Symbols: Vampires feed off of fear, and if a symbol provides enough comfort to ward off fear, then the vampire is repelled.
- Being Uninvited: If a vampire is unwelcome in a property, then they start to experience nausea and fatigue, eventually leading to death.
Garlic
Vampires are not weak to garlic. In fact, garlic is a natural anticoagulant - it prevents blood clotting. Vampires fabricated this myth in order to throw humans off their scent when they disguise themselves. If you see a supposed "vampire shelter" with garlic branches and nothing else hanging outside of the door, it's most likely a den.Genetics and Reproduction
Vampires can create other vampires through biting humans, but they are also capable of traditional reproduction as well.
Differences Between Born and Bitten Vampires
- Born vampires have pointed ears, while bitten vampires keep their round ears.
- Bitten vampires' forms stay locked at the exact age they were when they were bitten. Born vampires develop like most other species, but they have free reign over their form, being able to freeze or even reverse their aging.
- A born vampire's shapeshifting and fear-smelling powers come to them gradually, allowing for safe practice and greater mastery once their full potential is unlocked. The disadvantage is that sometimes the abilities take years or even centuries to develop entirely, so many born vampires are extremely weak compared to others. Bitten vampires immediately get the full range of vampiric abilities, and it usually doesn't end well. Bitten vampires are much more unstable than born vampires, and go feral much more often.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Needs human blood, obviously, but also lives on the fear of humans.
