Harengon

"Out of the way! I have three dozen quilts to stitch, the kiln is firing, and the blackberry jam is about to set! If you're not helping, you're a hurdle. Move your feet, long-shanks! The Spring Faire is only two months away and I am behind schedule!"
— Bixie, Master Weaver of the Green-Hill Warren

Origins: The Running Folk

The Harengon have been sprinting since time began for them.

  • The Restless Spirit: Their mythology states that their ancestors were the messengers of the Archfey, blessed with speed to outrun time itself. When they crossed into Cruinlagh, they channeled that kinetic energy into Creation.
  • The Hill-Towns: They carve elaborate, sprawling warrens into the sides of rolling hills. Unlike the dark, industrial mines of the Dwarves, Harengon warrens are bright, airy (lots of skylights), and chaotic. They are less like bunkers and more like bustling underground workshops.
  • The "Go-Go" Gene: Biologically, they have a high metabolism and high adrenaline. They need to be doing something with their hands. A Harengon sitting still is a Harengon who is likely asleep or ill.

Cultural Values: The Makers

Harengon culture revolves around The Great Faire.

  • The Art of the Hearth: Harengon's value the "Soft Arts." Quilting, pottery, basket-weaving, painting, and baking are considered the highest forms of prestige. A Master Jam-Maker commands the same respect in a Warren as a General does in a human city.

  •
  • The Market Cycle: Their year is dictated by the Faires. These aren't just shops; they are massive, week-long festivals where warrens compete for the "Blue Ribbon." The economy of the Harengon is the most vibrant in Cruinlagh because they are obsessed with quality.

  •
  • Communal Chaos: Privacy is rare in a warren. They are a "pile on" culture. They sleep in piles, eat in mess halls, and work in shared studios. They find silence unnerving and prefer the background hum of activity.

Because of their massive ears, they have incredibly sensitive hearing. Their markets often have strict "No Shouting" rules or "Quiet Hours." Loud noises (thunder, explosions) can physically incapacitate a Harengon, known as "The Freeze."
