Serpent Spire

One of the great and mysterious Monuments of Axthet, Serpent Spire is a towering spindle of pearly white stone that rises high into the sky out of the surrounding Axthet jungles. Like the other Monuments, nobody knows who built it, but it seems to be regularly visited by Axthet's elusive natives.   The central spire is surrounded by a pair of stone serpents that coil around it with their heads raised to the heavens. One is carved entirely out of red serpentinite rock, and its twin is cut from a single enormous spinel gemstone. The two stone serpents were carved with extreme care and in exquisite detail, with every smooth scale well defined. The inner spindle also bears reliefs carved into the pearly stone, of serpents bearing small wings upon their backs and halos above their heads.   The grove around the base of the spire is well kept. Earthenware bowls surround the spire's base, each made in the shape of a coiled serpent, and each holding one or more burnt nub of a wax candle.

This article is dedicated to the memory of my two pet corn snakes, Spinel and Serpentine, who recently passed away. Rest in peace, my bitey noodles.
