Benjamin Clarke
Born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 1861 to Patrick and Lavenia(nee Cobb). His brother Edward followed a few years later. There was also an older daughter, Sally.
Patrick died during the Civil War and Lavenia moved to Lincoln County to be closer to her relatives who soon moved to Burke County in the late 70s. Sally died shortly before 1880.
Both of the boys found jobs working on the Southern Railway; Ben would make his career while Ed would soon leave the service and take to the streets as a police officer in Morgansborough. By 1900 Ben had become a conductor on the line that passed through Burke County and Ed had secured his place as Chief of Police.
Lavenia passed away in 1905.
After his mother's death Ben began to drink more often around town when he was off duty, especially at Mull's Pub. His brother and he drifted apart. By 1907 he racked up considerable debt at most of the bars around town, however the Mulls do not take scroungers lightly.
Ben soon discovered that those who operated the Pub, and indeed the entire Sativum complex, were not simple business men and women but something much darker. Cornered in an alley by the depot on January 15, 1908, Magrit Weidner revealed her fangs to him and intimated that if his debts were not paid to the Mull clan they would be paid - in blood.
With nowhere else to turn Ben sought out his brother, although the pair hadn't spoke in two years. He managed to track his brother to an opium den on Lenoir St where he witnessed, from outside, his brother's magical powers.
Frightened, he went to Mull's Pub where Emilia 'Mia' Ratavoloira told him she would take care of Christofel Mull. Obliged to her, he maintained the distance from his brother and began to drink less - for a time.
That summer, Mia disappeared and the Southern RR stock plummeted. Ben began to drink again and rack up bar tabs. Without Mia or his brother to help the Mulls again threatened him. This time their offer was different: join their ranks or die.
On June 21, 1909 Ben Clarke became a Vampyre(or Lamian) in service of the Mull clan. Unfortunately for their machinations, Ed's seediness caught up with him and he was ousted from the position of Chief of Police.
Ben was promised the apartment of the absent Mia Ratavoloira when her lease ran out on Oct. 17 1915. He is currently serving as bartender at Mull's Pub - as a dark irony since alcohol has little effect on Lamians.
