Sumirite
Sumirite is a purple mineral growing all over the underground caverns below the city of Drain. Its origins are unknown, with the crystals showing up in even the earliest records documenting the history of Drain. But it has proved instrumental to the continued expansion and industrialization of Drain.
Early settlers of the underground caverns discovered that the crystals would regrow and reform naturally after mining. Mined pieces also retained their bright purple glow. The settlers fashioned the crystals into lanterns and lit their houses and neighborhoods with them. This expanded the local population from just underground-inclined Beasts to surface peoples moving underground into the early village of Drain.
Throughout it all, the waters of the entire planet kept draining at the South Pole and traveling all the way through the planet's core to spurt out at the Fountain at the other end. On its way, the water would erode through many of the crystals growing in the riverbed, separating clumps of sumirite. These clumps would then flow all the way to the city of Fountain, effectively forming a Sumirite Road/Waterway. This brought sumirite into the hands of the Order of Falcon Wizards, who discovered Sumirite's special property of storing and duplicating any magic spell. The discovery marked the tipping point in Drain's transformation.
News of the discovery made it back to Drain fast, along with a cadre of wizards from the Order, looking to massively expand the local mining operations. They used the sumirite crystals to create mechanized tools that made ploughing, planting and harvesting crops on the fields topside easier, boosting the local cultivation of food products. In return the locals enthusiastically started mining the crystals extensively, leaving just enough of a stump each time to ensure future regrowth. People all over the Southern Hemisphere also started migrating towards Drain, looking to take all the new farming and mining jobs that had been created. The underground village had morphed into a large city on the surface, with a small underground village on the below.
Empowered by a larger workforce, the wizards also commissioned the building of factories for the manufacture of various consumer goods, powering most of the factory machines with sumirite crystals. Drain also became a shipping port, where small ships would be filled with crates of those manufactured goods and transported through the Sumirite Road to Fountain. These ships were laden with excess of what Fountain needed, as other cities and towns on Moontides were served by the boats afterwards. The boats would make their way back to Drain using the surface longitudinal rivers which only flow southwards. Drain transformed into the centre of industry for the entire planet, all through the magic-storing and replicating powers of sumirite.
