Dôrath Shrimp
These titanic cusins of shrmip found in the surface oceans are found under the Middle Mountains of Solsticea. Dôrath Shrimp get their name from the Dwarves that cultivate them, named after the Dwarven name for the mountain range they are found. These large crustaceans play a crucial role in their ecosystem, helping to break down organic matter and inorganic metals found in long forgotten dwarven crafts and ore vains. They are also a key food source for larger cave-dwelling predators that call the same area home.
They have also in recent years been tamed and used as mounts by Dwarves, using their amphibious nature and ability to climb to better maneuver underground as well as on the surface. This latter example is more rare but still somewhat commonplace in Dwarven cities.

Basic Information
Anatomy
Size and Appearance:
Dôrath Shrimps are large crustaceans, measuring between 6 to 8 feet in length. They have a robust, elongated body with a heavily armored exoskeleton speckled with various ores found in their subterranean home.
Head and Sensory Organs:
The head of a Dôrath Shrimp features a pair of large, multifaceted eyes capable of keen sight even in low light conditions. They possess formidable antennae that not only detect vibrations and chemical cues but also aid in navigating through the complex underground terrain.
Thorax and Appendages:
The thorax of the Dôrath Shrimp is powerful and segmented, supporting several pairs of immensely strong, jointed appendages.Their foremost pair of appendages are robust claws, stronger than steel, used for crushing rocks, defending against predators, and securing prey.
Abdomen and Tail:
The abdomen is muscular and elongated, tapering to a broad, powerful tail that propels them through swift currents and facilitates agile movements.Small, sturdy appendages along the tail assist in maneuvering and stabilizing their large bodies in turbulent waters.
Internal Organs:
Internally, Dôrath Shrimps possess a well-developed digestive system capable of processing minerals and organic matter found in their rocky habitat.Their circulatory system includes a robust heart that pumps nutrient-rich hemolymph (invertebrate blood) throughout their massive bodies.
Adaptations to Environment:
To blend into their rocky surroundings, Dôrath Shrimps have an exoskeleton speckled with ores such as iron, copper, and quartz, providing both camouflage and additional protection. A few are even known to encorperate more rare and valuable ores. They lack bioluminescence but rely on their keen senses and formidable strength to thrive in the dark, nutrient-rich waters of the Middle Mountains.
Ecology and Habitats
The Dôrath Shrimp live in a few veried environments from subterranean caves and ravines to long abandoned Dwarf structures. The subterranean caves and ravines where Dôrath Shrimp thrive are characterized by intricate limestone formations. Stalactites and stalagmites decorate the ceilings and floors, creating an otherworldly landscape. Underground rivers and streams carve through the rock, forming pools and small waterfalls. These bodies of water are often crystal clear, fed by the water table above. The water in these habitats is typically cool, ranging from 50-59°F, and these environments are low in light, often relying on bioluminescent organisms and magical gems that emite light or faint shafts of light filtering through cracks in the rock in areas nearer to the surface.
The abandoned dwarf structures are grand and imposing, with massive stone pillars, arches, and intricately carved walls depicting ancient dwarven lore and history. Many areas have collapsed or become unstable over time, creating a maze-like network of passages and rooms. The underground rivers and streams often connect the natural caves and the abandoned dwarf structures, creating a continuous habitat for the Dôrath Shrimp. The shrimp move freely between the two environments, finding food and shelter in both the natural and artificial features of their subterranean world. The dwarf structures, with their intricate design and numerous hiding spots, provide additional refuge from predators and harsh environmental conditions.
