Marceline

As the Seventh Child of a Seventh Child in a long line of witches, Marceline was raised from birth to inheret Vaylors Watch from her mother, the previous watcher. Such was the way of the Watch since the time of the fourth (or, according to some, fifth) Watcher, an heir born under the right conditions would be chosen every generation and raised in the duties and importance of the Watcher. They would come to understand that while this life chosen for them would be isolating, without someone to kept the beast fed and sedated it would undoubtedly break free from it's transitory prison and cause untold destruction.   Marceline never once bucked against her duties. She knew for as long as she could remember that if you are capable of helping, you have to help. Even if everyone would call you a witch, or a heretic, or threaten to burn your little cabin down, you just kept helping because it was right. While not blessed with the Gift, as very few Watchers ever had been, she studied the ways of the Old magic, learning how to manipulate the weave through material means.   Her mother and mentor died younger than most Watchers, forcing Marceline to take up the full responsibilities of the position before having taken a partner to father the next Watcher. This left Marceline in a desperate position, as the order had not been without an heir since long before her time.   Early in her watch, Marceline established a good relationship with Reverend Luthor after the old outlaw came to her door looking for a better way to live. The Reverend studied under her for a couple of years, learning what Marceline could teach him about the Old Magic's and the ways of the Weaver.   Seeing potential in her student, she suggested that the Reverend should inheret the Watch from her. Luthor found he couldn't accept the responsibilities of the Watch, but instead with the old witches help he established the Vaylorian Society, a loose knit community of scholars and monster hunters dedicated to unraveling the secrets of the universe.   Grateful for the help, but still without a suitable heir, Marceline took on a young woman on the run from her restrictive family who was powerful with the gift. She begun training Harper in the ways of the Watch, showing her both how to harness her Gift and how to call upon the old magics.   Now that the Beast has been defeated, the Watch has officially ended. Marceline has returned to her cottage and pledged to continue offering her aid to the people of Shellridge, but has no interest in finding another cosmic mess to get stuck into.
