Holerunner

The Holerunner is one of the most extraordinary and weird looking creatures of Mithra. It is widely used for transportation in the south, a role which it owes to its incredible speed and strength. The Holerunner is also used in the Hearthlands, but much more rarely. They are expensive to get but earn their worth back quickly. They are used in various militaries and by some rich traders. Born from the discrepancy, they are some of the most unique creatures Mithra has to offer.

Fysiology

The Holerunner is a large Quadrupedal lizard that has earned his fame for being one of the fastest and weirdest land animals in Mithra. It's an omnivore, living largely off plants and supplementing its diet with scavenged meat. Its extraordinary shape is one of the reasons people find this animal so weird. The hole in his back isn't known to have any uses, as are the two spines. Most of its primary organs are situated in his underbelly, which would suggest his upper belly is not necessary. It has four strong and fast legs that can propel this animal at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. The large and wide tale is used to keep balance during these fast endeavors. Holerunners have four large nostrils that help to find meat from kilometers away.

Origin & Habitat

The species almost certainly came forth from the discrepancy. No normal evolutionary patterns would produce this animal, nor can we place it in any of the evolutionary trees. Research shows the Holerunner to have originated around the time of the discrepancy, roughly somewhere around the southern savannahs. This, together with the arid lands of the free cities, is where it is mostly found. Here it has enough space to move fast and scavenger any food it can find. They usually move small herds up to five individuals of which one is female. Their incredible speed makes sure getting caught by anything large enough to take it down, almost never happens.

Lifespan

A holerunner female only lays eggs once a year. During this time, males will fight over mating rights after which the female will lay a single egg. Their weird physiology, however, makes for a complicated birthing process that goes wrong more than it goes right. This is one of the reasons why they are so rare and expensive. A holerunner will start their life with the two spines connected by the flesh, after which they grow apart until they quite far apart. An individual holerunner can live up to 120 years. This is probably because the discrepancy pumped them full of excess life-force. This might also be the reason why they are so fast.

Usage

The holerunner is a prime subject for transportation and military use. Its speed and carrying capacity are perfect for trading and transportation, while its thick hide and ability to carry both troops, munition, and armaments is incredibly useful in combat. The hole in the body of a holerunner is perfect for housing a cart of sorts. Usually connected with a deck on top of the creature, this box can house things like goods or important people. Since the invention of the automatic Fount crossbow, there is usually a large crossbow stationed atop the upper deck. The driver of a holerunner usually sits in the front. The rarity of this creature makes for holerunner-breeders to be rare and rich.
