About Dragons

"Dragons? There are no dragons. Only children and fools believe in dragons. Those are all fairy tales to make children behave."
— Sir Wilhelm von Arnsheim, shortly before he went on an expedition to the Shadow Ridge Mountains and was never seen again.

Dragons are extinct - at least, that is the common opinion. While these majestic creatures once soared through the skies of Mirintha, none have been seen for the past three ages. Some say they vanished under mysterious circumstances, while others believe they left this world altogether. Unlike the ruins of ancient civilizations, no remnants of draconic cities have ever been found on Borendal, the continent they are said to have inhabited. Yet, numerous documents from the First Age reference dragons. Among them is the famed The Song of Life of Life, a revered text that speaks of them and their connection to Cahaya. Skeptics, however, insist these writings were fabricated by the Peri for unknown reasons.

I wish I could see one of those dragons with my own eyes.

The disappearance of dragons also explains the origins of the Kadal, a race born in the Third Age. According to legend, they were created by Karas, son of the goddess Cahaya and the dragon Bjarnskvir, as living tributes to the memory of dragons. Some speculate that dragons evolved into the Kadal over time - a claim the authors of this book firmly reject. Another persistent rumor posits that while Kadal share no biological ties to dragons, a few true dragons may still walk among us. These tales suggest dragons possessed the ability to shapeshift into humanoid forms, retaining only their horns, albeit in a diminished size. If true, dragons may be hiding in plain sight, blending seamlessly into our societies.

"Dragons? Of course there are dragons. And one day they will return. And on the day of their return, they will destroy all those who are unworthy. Those who did not believe in them and longed for their return. With fire and claws, they will annihilate the unbelievers, and only their devoted servants will be deemed worthy to continue living as their subjects."
— Bartholomew Anarake, leader of the Ashen Enclave

There are various individuals and groups who even believe that the dragons are still alive. However, no one knows their exact whereabouts. Extremist groups go so far as to claim that the dragons will one day return. Among these groups, efforts are being made to hasten this return. While in most groups these efforts are limited to animal sacrifices and conjurations, dark rumors even speak of human sacrifices.

Human sacrificies? That seems to be going a bit too far.

TLDR for my players

Dragons once roamed the skies of Borendal and were last seen at the end of the First Age.
The Kadal are a species created by the god Karas as a reminder of the dragons.
Several cults and organizations, such as the Ashen Enclave, await the return of the dragons.

The Truth

What the inhabitants of Mirintha are unaware of is the fact that dragons still exist. After the tragedy that occured to the son of Bjarnskvir, being taken from the dragons to life with his mother Cahaya, all dragons went to deep slumber within the Shadow Ridge Mountains on Borendal. It is said that the Lake of Sorrow at the foot of the mountains is made up of the tears of dragons.

Also, the rumor about shapeshifting dragons is true and they sometimes visit cities or villages and even live among the rest of the population for weeks, months or even years before they vanish again.

Okay, da hast du dir wirklich was ganz eigenes gemacht.

Danke ^^.

I am obsessed with the layout of your articles! It is so immersive and beautiful! And the context itself is so dynamic. I like how obscure knowledge about dragons is in Mirintha. Awesome work <3

Interesting to see all the theories first and then the real truth about them. I do hope people don't really do human sacrifices to bring them back!   Also the section for players is a quite fun extra. I really recognise the pain of players not reading anything at all xp

Feel free to check my entries for the World Anvil Worldbuilidng Awards if you want to see what I am up to!

Well, we will see if there really are those human sacrifices ...
