Boa pits

Unlike many other cultures around Mirateia, the Crienia citizens who enjoy their violence, citizens can visit the Hippodrome Festivus place where gladiatorial games, chariot races and the like are often held with regular intervals, all frequently ending in deaths or wounds.   While it is officially only the state or state-sanctioned people who are allowed to host these games, every city with some self-respect has at least one underground fighting ring, often referred to as Boa pits, Boa being an old dwarfish word for violence.  These Boa pits are typically found in the cellars of taverns. People fighting in these pits can earn up to a week's salary in a single night, so the pits are sought after by the younger members of the society or those who dont have any other option.   To fight in these Boa pits, one has to rank up the unofficial ranking list. A young man who wishes to earn a living in these pits often starts out fighting in backstreets or warehouses, and if he wins enough or shows promise, he will at some point be offered a drink in one of the taverns that host a Boa pit. its rare but its also possible to earn access to the pits if one is in company with a fighter who have earned access, these guests are not expected to fight, but they typically place bets and drink ale so acts as a second source of revenue for the host, and while they are not expected to fight, they are allowed to it should a spot open up.   While the Boa pits are technically illegal and will be shut down should one be discovered, the state often turns a blind eye to the pits with the reasoning that not only does it keep the more aggressive individuals off the streets, it also serves as a way for young men to get some fighting experience before they join the Imperial legions.

Intriguing. I like the reason why the state tends to turn a blind eye to their existence.

Thanks :) Yeah, while it may not keep them all from causing trouble elsewhere, it keeps enough
