Void Cloud
Void clouds are sentient clouds of elecromagnetised space debris, gases, and stardust. One of the oldest species in the galaxy (though some xenologists do not classify them as a 'species' but as a natural phenomena akin to cosmic storms), void clouds are theorised to have evolved approximately ten billion years ago, shortly after the formation of the universe. In visible wavelengths, they appear as bright "balls" of purplish-white light. Long-range scans of void clouds have revealed that their elecromagnetic fields are in fact some kind of simple neural network, granting the clouds rudimentary intelligence, if not sentience. Furthermore, void clouds have been detected receiving communicative impulses from one another at interstellar distances. The most widely-accepted theory as to how this is accomplished is via some kind of quantum entaglement, a natural form of the communications technology that has eluded engineers for centuries.
Despite their rudimentary intelligence, or perhaps because of it, void clouds are hostile to ships that venture too close to them. They are capable of projecting powerful plasma beams that resemble lightning, easily capable of tearing through even military-grade shields and armour. Studies of this process from the leftover debris of destroyed void clouds have allowed it to be reverse-engineered, and "cloud lightning" weapons have become popular among some navies and ground forces.
Among many of the religious and spiritual throughout the galaxy, void clouds are often considered to be the divine remnants of the creation of the universe. Many believe that the void clouds are sentinels of some kind, animated by a higher power to watch over time and creation. The destruction of a void cloud, having travelled through the stars for ten billion years, is considered to be an ill omen. Whenever a void cloud is destroyed, its electromagnetic field collapses, sending EM waves and debris hurtling throughout the system, and organic crew members of starships in the vicinity often report feelings of dread or impending doom.
