Clerk

A clerk is a worker profession involved in basic office administrative tasks. Clerks are lower-ranked white-collar employees who perform tasks such as record keeping, filing, reception, and secretary work. Historically, clerks made up a significant portion of pre-FTL service industry employees. Before the development of advanced artificial intelligence units, clerks were required to perform the basic administrative tasks necessary for businesses, government departments, and other complex office environments to function.

However, with the development of advanced computer systems, such as the self-evolving logic system (SELS), many functions that clerks provided were no longer necessary. Commercially available computer systems replaced clerks en masse, as they were capable of performing clerical tasks both faster and at a far cheaper cost. In many spacefaring nations, this caused major unemployment crises that governments and societies struggled to adapt to. Some governments, such as the United Nations of Earth, adapted with ease due to their extensive existing welfare and support systems. In the Tzynn Empire, many former clerks found themselves sold into slavery, unable to find new work or training.

Today, although the profession is mostly obsolete, clerks still exist. They are most common in nations that have outlawed or otherwise restricted the use of artificial intelligence, such as the Kingdom of Yondarim. In some cases, managers prefer sapient receptionists to automated systems. This is particularly true in high-end businesses, as employing clerks has become something of a sign of prestige and wealth. In other cases, a business or government department may not be able or willing to afford the infrastructure necessary for expansive computer systems, and finds it simpler to hire clerks for simple tasks.
