Ocean Court

Also known as the Atlantean Court.

Of the various governing bodies located in Midnight Town, the Ocean Court is the only one that functions as an extension of a broader government. While Atlantis is the capital of the sea, calling them an Atlantean court is a bit silly since they're not anywhere near Atlantis.

The court serves the interest of all the water-based species who live in town. Organizational structures like this are not always needed, since the seafolk tend to congregate in specific areas. As such, it's harder to draw on the commonalities to better explain how it works.

Mermaids tend to take the lead within the court. Selkies can slide into a bit of a gray area, since they're also a kind of shifter. In Midnight Town, they tend to remain separate from both groups.

Of the different groups of supernatural creatures, the ocean court is the ones who hold themselves separate to the most degree. While the others might eventually blend together and mix and shift in composition, the ocean court remains the ocean court.

Municipal Leadership

Since it's a local function of a broader government, the ocean court tends to have less authority than a lot of their counterparts. Their titles also tend to be a bit more mundane-sounding. Less royalty and more "assistant manager" type roles.

Those in these positions take them seriously, though, and insist on others taking them seriously in turn.

For being the ocean court, the members are usually quite happy to be on land and find it just as comfortable as being in the water. Attempts to make accommodations for their ocean-y-ness has led to several ridiculous situations in which no one is comfortable and it usually turns out the person doing it was less well-meaning and more smug and insufferable in their "goodness."
