Grey Mountains

Geography

They extend out 350 miles from Misty Mountains to the east. The eastern part extends to the north of the Lonely Mountain and Iron Hills. The Forest River - which flows through Mirkwood - starts in the Grey Mountains.   More importantly for us is the two branches that form in the eastern end of the Grey Mountains. Between them is the Withered Heath. This is a black, desolate valley where dragons bred. Hence why the War of Dwarvesand Dragons was centered here.

Fauna & Flora

Dragons were the most famous residents, but they were primarily in the region of the Weathered Heath. Orcs apparently moved in as well, but their fortunes appear to follow the same trends as the orcs of the Misty Mountains. A few men and dwarves have a presence there. However, most dwarf colonies were temporary affairs, being driven off by the dragons.

Natural Resources

Sources describe the Grey Mountains as rich in may types of ores, but they do not get too specific as to what those were. Their other name - the Iron Mountains - and proximity to the Iron Hills suggests that the Grey Mountains probably have similar reserves.
