Hamashi Delta

As the Hamashi river flows down from the verdant mountain that dominates Western Namu, it turns from a trickling stream near the peak, to furious whitewaters that crash down the mountain side. Once it reaches the base of the mountain, however, it soon slows and widens into the sprawling, marshy wetlands of the Hamashi Delta, dividing the Kingdom of Enkur from the Republic of Namu as it does so, before finally flowing out into the ocean.

Settlements along the Hamashi Delta are small and sparse, largely simple farmsteads with the occasional trading-post dotted along the route to South Enkur's northernmost city, and beyond on the great road to Ab-Enkuri. Buildings are constructed on stilts, raised above the sucking mud to give some protection from flooding. Neighbouring farmsteads are sometimes connected by reed-mat causeways, but the most common mode of travel is via boat along the Hamashi itself.

The Hamashi Delta is mostly covered by thick stands of reeds, with mangrove thickets clustered around the upstream regions of the delta. Jinn's Tears grow plentifully here, and in the half-light of the dawn and dusk whole swathes of the delta sparkle with blue and orange light.
Hamashi Cattails, named for the river, are sometimes harvested for their starchy roots and hollow stems used in pen-making, but the roots are generally considered to be famine food, and reed pens are thought to be terribly outmoded by more cosmopolitan Enkurine.

Many species have made the Hamashi Delta their home, the most well-known of which is the Screeching Toad, whose distinctive call can be heard above the haze of insects throughout the day.
One of the few mammalian species in the Hamashi Delta, the Foxbat is a small, gliding creature that makes its nest high up in the mangrove treetops in order to avoid predators.
The Mudstalker is a large reptilian ambush predator that mostly feeds on large fish and Screeching Toads, although attacks on Enkur citizens are not unheard of. Mudstalker is also a derogatory term for the Lizardfolk of the Republic of Namu, although only the most foolhardy would ever use it to their face. Whilst they are not native, Namu Shrikes occasionally swoop down from high up the mountain across the border to fish and hunt other small game.
