Grotto Gryphon
A type of Gryphon, Griffon or Griffin known for their territorial nature and scorching scream.
Unlike the common traits of gryphons Grotto gryphons don't take residence within mountain ranges, instead they find caverns to reside inside. The size of the cavern determines the number of the gryphon's mates present inside its nest.
Their most notable feature is their screech, using echolocation to hunt their prey it makes a ringing high pitch. Hearing this screech means the gryphon knows your location, a horrible realization as there isn't much than can be done once heard as they move with ferocity emerging from the shadows.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The known description of them is that of a combination of a hairless rodent and a vulture. Having a long pale beak stained with red patches, and long shovelled talons on the front legs connected to large flaky feathered wings used for a brief flight. Their body consists of grey feathers in the upper half with wrinkly pink skin on the lower half, with legs, a tail of rodents and a vulture's mane. Their bones are rather heavy compared to other gryphons likely as a result of flying less often in comparison.
Genetics and Reproduction
They participate in Polygamy with the male having numeral mates depending on the size of the cavern.
Each female on average has one offspring that manages to leave the nest before the male kills them.
The eggs are buried with any possessions that the gryphon has collected over its lifetime.
Growth Rate & Stages
They have a short life span in comparison of other gryphons.
They have 3 main phases of their life:
- Youth 1-5, is the stage for growth before they attempt to leave.
- Adult 5-40, this lifetime consists of them living their life in perfect adult form.
- Elder 40-50, their feathers fall out leaving them grounded and mostly helpless suntil they starve.
Ecology and Habitats
They tend to live in the deepest darkest crevices of the caverns. This functions as their hunting ground, nest and breeding ground.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They aren't picky eaters and will consume anything regardless of how rotten it is. They require a lot of food to survive leading to them being hunted for eating cattle when they aren't able to obtain enough food from their cavern.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
They have opal eyes although they are completely blind and rely on echolocation using their infamous screech to locate prey, this is paired with their exceptional smell making it very hard to not be pinpointed when in an enclosed region with it.
