Wild Mushrooms and Healing Herbs
It is said that long ago, after the Destruction of Sestus, that the Huthal were living in the Ledges and in the underground cities beneath Merida. They suffered from malnutrition because the animals and the vegetation in The Ledges were thin, sickly and as starved as they were. At that time, the Warden and the Gracious Lady had mercy on them.
The Warden (Ataos) shaped the waters of the Thulin to shift some parts of its course through the underground caves and cities of The Ledges. He also gave the Huthal the ability to see the traces of Wild Magic, so that they would not accidentally step over a part of the path that would release a white hot jet of sparkling, splitting magic and ensnare someone. Later the Huthal Elders placed warning stones in those parts of The Ledges that were most dangerous.
The Gracious Lady (Mauna) saw Ataos' compassion and was shamed by her anger toward the unloved, forgotten children of Sestus and crafted vegetation and mushrooms that could grow in little or no light, deep in the undercities of the Huthal. The Sennel, Crabbyfoot and Longfooted Mushrooms are now common in the dishes of the Huthal. Thanks to the traders that travel between The Ledges and many towns of Merida, they are now considered delicacies in other parts of the country. Mauna also gave them healing herbs that could grow near the waters of the Rockside river, the river that runs through the bottom of The Ledges. It starts at the foot of the waterfall at the mouth of The Ledges.
While some of the Huthal still ate meat and the fish that survived in the Rockside river, many of the Huthal began to pray to the Warden and The Gracious Lady. Some the Huthal left and became priests of the Warden or the Gracious Lady. Others decided that with the favor of the gods above ground, they could begin to live outside of The Ledges and founded towns near gorge where they hid after the Destruction. Others ventured even further into Merida and became traders, eventually living amongst the other children of Merida.
