Varrekk Stone
Freelord commander, Man of Stone, Stoneman Varrekk Ryn Stone
Varrekk Stone is a Freelord Commander in The Vanguard and has been for essentially his entire life, a member of the organization. Pushed to it by an attack upon an Aasimar he had called a friend in his earlier years living and working in and around the Godless Peninsula, his job as a smith bringing him various clients from various locations and walks of life. When he met his friend Yira, the two became close after repeated orders submitted to the smith in the town of Exile's Gate. Becoming good friends due to Varrekk's unbigoted sense of closeness to the Aasimar, the two of them would spend much of their freetime together, fantasizing about a better world, one that was the opposite of the harsh and brutal one they both inhabited now.
Yet like all things in Meria, it is not to last for an eternity. Varrekk would endure a blow emotionally when a Hate Mob would manifest outside of his smithy one day, venturing deep into the unclean portion of the town in a rare show of fervor. Killing many, the final stop was his smithy near the southern gate. The pair were sharing a drink outside when the mob approached. Despite attempting to retreat into the attached house Varrekk had, the mob was inconsolable. They bashed down his door, smashed his window and like mindless drones beat Varrekk within an inch of his life, and took Yira's life as their final toll upon the town of Exile's Gate.
Recovering over months from the brutal beating he had endured, Varrekk saw his work slipping away from him, the quality no more what it once was. He was alone again, that orphan on the streets of Cetral who stole and begged for scraps who had managed to make something of himself. Had even found a friend, maybe even someone to love. One night, in a brutal rage he would nearly destroy his entire home and then go to his smithy, and fashion a plain, featureless silver and iron mask.
Taking his finest armor and weaponry he had crafted and kept he would don it, no longer caring about living the life had so painstakingly created from nothing, he would leave, hyping himself into a frenzy to go and kill every guard he could find until he would inevitably be taken down and killed for his murderous rampage. Hate deeply. That was what he was doing. As he draws his master craft short swords and approaches a dozing guard, he is pulled into an alley.
A man cloaked and masked as well simply tells him:
"Your rage need not die here. Come with me," is all he would say. Varrekk would debate himself for a moment but ultimately obey the stranger, and from there, his path and journey in The Vanguard would begin.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Varrekk Stone's life story has long been laid out by himself as a man of working background, of a life of serving others in many of his jobs. A life of interaction with the 'unclean' and realizing that just like him, they were living, breathing individuals as well. Born to a pair of parents who did not want him, he was orphaned and abandoned by the pair to the streets, and was raised by a fellow homeless man named Zeryn. Zeryn had been a wretch upon the streets of the ever advancing city of Cetral for years. A former hero of the military, he had disgraced himself and his family name with a grave mistake he had made during an operation which had gotten many men under his command killed.
He was ordered to take The Oath, or killed, yet a slow and ruthless punishment was installed onto him, a life of destitution and poverty. He would raise the boy with the meager money he made teaching some local adolescents and young people what he knew regarding sword fighting. This was Varrekk's first exposure to such subjects and quickly he showed himself to have a disposition regarding sword fighting. It became his prime focus every day and eventually when Zeryn had saved enough money, he was able to afford smithing lessons. If Varrekk understood a sword and how to use it, he should understand how to craft one from beginning to end. Varrekk was even more predisposed to smithing, and the smith he worked under agreed to grant him lodging and food in exchange for working for him as well as learning.
After a few years, Varrekk had learned all here was to learn in Cetral. Wanting to see more of the world, he would set off on his own, and eventually drift into and become enamored with Exile's Gate. A town of such diversity with such a wide range of peoples. He fell in love with it, and with the coin he had saved, purchased a run down, abandoned smithy near the south gate leading into the Godless Peninsula. From here, the rest is history.
Education
Varrekk educated himself in his home in Exile's Gate when he had the chance, learning mathematics, basic arcane knowledge, history of the world. He would read any and everything he got his hands on.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Varrekk Stone has achieved much in his tenure as a member of The Vanguard. He still smiths to this day and produces some of the highest quality equipment and weaponry and has even learned how to install less powerful but still very welcomed magical enchantments onto the items he crafts. He is noted as a brilliant swordsman and leader of men, leading one of the rare raids upon The Empire in the mines in The Devilclaw Spires.
He tracked and destroyed a dangerous gnoll encampment deep in the mountains and established one of the first surface fully Vanguard inhabited towns. Hidden from sight the memers of The Vanguard live harsh, but free lives in this small piece of freedom, of utopia away from the horror of The Empire.
Failures & Embarrassments
One of the greatest perceived failures that Varrekk has endured was the loss of a large contingent of men in an ambush coordinated by said gnoll tribe. On their way back from the robbery of the mines in which they had hauled much raw ore and mineral to be sold back to Blackpath Coalition fences, they were ambused in a treacherous gorge where the gnolls fired arrow, sling and spell down into the ravine. Men died in droves, and there was no cover to be found.
Barely escpaing, a greatly culled batallion would take shelter in the caves of a nearby mountain, with vengeance surging at their hearts. Even with the damage they had endured, the gnolls were still lesser in number to them, the geographical and surprise nature of the attack turning it into a massacre. They had greater numbers, equipment, and will to succeed. Waiting a few days to allow wounds to knit and souls to fortify, Varrekk would track some gnolls to their encampment, and without waiting, the slaughter began.
Mental Trauma
One of the greatest mental scars Varrekk bears is the brutal murder of Yira right in front of him. He had failed to protect him, his friend. His greatest most true friend. He had loved Yira like a brother, perhaps someething more, and he had been too weak to stop it. It is said that sometimes attendands of Freelord Commander can hear him thrash awake yelling for Yira, for the mob to stop, that his bed can be soaked in sweat from the brutality of the nightmares.
Yet it has granted Varrekk and undeniable strength of will to see his missions completed and to most of all tear down The Empire.
Intellectual Characteristics
Varrekk is noted to possess a base intelligence that is rather sufficient, but despite his self taught nature and inquisitive and natural intellect he is not known to be and does not claim to be some intellectual savant. He knows what he needs to know and does consume knowledge, but it is not his primary strength that he relies upon most in day to day affairs and combat.
Morality & Philosophy
Varrekk bears an immense hatred for The Empire that can border on obsessive at times. He despises The Empire and states he would rather die a thousand deaths than ever return to bend the knee to Harbinger, his Immortals, The Assembly, and any and all fascist inforcers of the God of Hate's will.
He respects those willing to die for their beliefs and especially for another's freedom. As such he is an immensely capably leader and an utterly staunch ally for one to have, without question willing to walk into hell itself to save you, and if he cant save you, avenge you.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Varrekk has stated he is motivated nearly solely by the destruction of The Empire, and the freeing of its people. He has stated he cares nothing more than for these goals and while he knows it likely will not happen in his lifetime, he is a dedicated believer in the cause and works every day to further its agenda to the Day of Uprising, the day in which they throw off their shackles and rise up to destroy The Empire.
