Parethal Freelord
The Lord of the Vanguard, The First Freelord, Freelord Supreme Parethal Nur Freelord (a.k.a. Perry, PF, Freeman)
Parethal Freelord, born Parethal Gendarim of Ortis, was a fighter of immense renown, and at one point was an Inquisitor in The Assembly. Belonging to the order of The Feyhunters, an Ortisian oriented order that specialized in taking on missions inside Ortis, and generally guarded the continent from threats internal, external, and extraplanar.
Born to a standard peasant family in Ortis, Parethal lost his father to an infection of The Whimsy that resulted in fifteen innocents killed before he was put down by Immortal Varesha Ocran. Never forgiving the warrior for the sadly necessary death of his father, Parethal would go on to deeply resent The Immortals as an organization for a number of reasons. Growing up and showing obvious skill and talent accompanied with an impressive intelligence, the young man would apply for and be selected to join The Assembly.
Ranking in the middle of his class consistently, he was known to be a reliable combatant and strategist that specialized in longsword combat and longer ranged rifles. Graduating The Vrelman Inquisitiorial Academy with a respectable rank in his class he was paired with the man he would ultimately found The Vanguard with and fall in love with, Jaryn Krys.
After some time in service to The Assembly and The Empire, Parethal and Jaryn were sent on a mission that would ultimately see them both disavow The Empire and quietly and expertly go rogue and disappear off the face of the earth. Sent to hunt down a corrupted group of soldiers in northern Jarentasar at an isolated village, they instead discovered a village that while isolated in its rural mountainous placement had nearly fully integrated with the formerly outcast tieflings, aasimar, and other unclean peoples.
The Immortal with them, Immortal Garen Shen, a member of the suspect and highly distrusted Immortal Sect of The Crusaders of Harbinger, a highly fanatical and brutal subset of Immortals, commanded the young Inquisitors and their retinue and attache of soldiers that the village be put to the sword for its atrocities. Parethal and Jaryn both argued against it, claiming they could simply find the mayor or eolderman and perhaps a few other officials and make examples of them and resegregate the unclean peoples.
Shen declined, and forced the plan into action, nearly single handedly killing the entire village himself, with it put to the torch after the residents were massacred to a child.
Parethal would never allow himself to forget or forgive himself for not trying harder, and it was the final straw that ultimately broke the back of both he and Jaryn. Faking their deaths in a convincing manner via some slight of hand and explosives, the pair would trek off into the Edrian wilderness and found The Vanguard.

Personal history
Parethal Freelord grew up in the town of Kybad, in Ortis. Son to a healer in the local church and a blacksmith, the Freelords were an average, standard family that resided in The Empire. Life in Ortis was dangerous at times given the fey-borne plague known as The Whimsy. The infected would become unhinged and lose all sense of self and self restraint and would become psychotic. Their inhibitions left behind those infected and reaching the stage of the disease known as 'The Maddening', they would begin to attack any living creature they could find.
Those in The Maddening are intensely fast, absurdly strong, and overly durable for what they should be. They can often require entire squads of trained soldiers, wizards, even Immortals. As such, when projections stated a certain area would be engulfed in The Whimsy spores, it was wise to not travel there. Parethal's father was an unknowing victim of a bad forecast, and was traveling with some goods he had forged to sell off at Finality when a spore of Whimsy detonated near him without his knowledge. Believing himself fine he sold the goods and returned home, when the effects began shortly after returning home.
Attempting to hide it, as some have been known to be able to master the disease and gain immunity to it, it did not work. Exiting his house and attempting to flee Kybad before The Maddening would take hold, he unfortunately would fail.
Entering the psychotic state, Parethal would witness his father tear apart innocent civilians and guards alike. The death only stopped when Immortal Varesha Ocran arrived at the scene and dueled the maddened man. After she delivered the blow, a young Parethal would take up a fallen guard's spear and charge at The Immortal, who simply turned and took the blow, the spear haft snapping, and barely scratching her plate armor.
This would fundamentally change Parethal. Without his father, he was lost growing up often, unsure of what to do, and where to go. Believing the only way to make a better life for himself and his mother and any future loved ones, he had to do the one thing his father specifically told him to never do: join The Assembly.
Education
Educated in the Vrelman Inquisitorial Academy, Parethal received the best education that money could possibly buy.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Mental Trauma
The destruction of a small town in northern Jinsa that had recently reintegrated with their tiefling and aasimar neighbors who had been outcasts. Not affecting anyone and keeping to themselves Immortal Garen Shen ordered Parethal, his partner and all other associated Imperial forces to brutally massacre everyone in the town and put it to the torch. He would never be able to forgive himself for even staying there let alone half-hearatedly participate, and the scenes of brutality and carnage he witnessed from the Immortal would haunt him to his final days.
Intellectual Characteristics
Noted for his belief in self determination and one's own freedom, Parethal was considered an empathetic and sympathetic man who would more often than not hear one out and give them another chance. As such, during his tenure as an Inquisitor and especially after his defection, he had a great many number of friends inside and outside of The Assembly.
Morality & Philosophy
Parethal was an unapologetic 'live free or die' type. He yearned for the far gone years he would learn about in primary school of freedom and no restraints, despite the propaganda that demonized it. It just seemed right to him. He grew up growing more and more cynical and pessimistic though, believing that there would never again be an era of freedom, and that his fellow citizens were too worried about going to church and praying before bed than they were about standing up for themselves to the tyrannical regime he now served much to his own chagrin.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Parethal was motivated personally to leave the world a better place than he had come into it as, even if it was the small things. He was dedicated to utilizing his position as an Inquisitor, which he reached the rank of, to create a better world. Helping struggling families, orphans, wounded veterans and guards, Parethal donated his impressive Assembly salary largely to charities and scientific facilities.

Quotes & Catchphrases
'We cannot choose the circumstance of our birth, nor its time or place. We cannot choose who our family by blood is, we cannot choose the world we enter. What we can choose is how we leave it. Do we leave it darker, more full of hate and division, or do we leave it brighter, more full of love and hope. This is the mark of a man, or a human, of a mortal. What we do with our tiny, insignificant lives will echo in eternity.'
