Matres Estar

Matres Estar was thrust into the role of Theologian Primus due solely to accidental circumstance, not any well thought out plot or ruthless political strategy inside the Church. In fact it was complete accident that he became the Theologian Primus because another of his rival Theologians, of which he was at the time as well, coordinated a mass assassination of the other six. At the last minute though, Matres had a change in plans when the mayor of Setrak had a sudden and tragic death in his family, his young son. Matres had to oversee the funeral rights and could not attend the annual meeting of the Theologian Primus and their Theologian underlings.    This meeting is known as 'The Gathering' and is bound in the religious text of the Book of Harbinger as a place where absolutely no violence, scheming or harm may come to any of the Theologians or the Theologian Primus.    A fellow Theologian, Theologian Gath Halsor had eternium explosives planted in the meeting room under the table, and planned to detonate them after he left the room under the pretense of using the bathroom or praying in private, killing all in attendance. The plot is known as 'The Betrayal at the Gathering' and is often taught for its complexity in attempting to solve the numerous issues presented with such a blatant act of violation of their sacred text.   Gath Halsor had to instead pivot with the plot, sending an assassin from the Imperial Disposal Guild in secret, another breach of sacred law, to kill Matres, but the assassin failed and was felled by Matred himself. Gath, operating under a limited window was pressed to detonate the explosive and kill the other five Theologians and the Theologian Primus, the longest serving ever at 127 years, Parces Savoril.   Not knowing his assassin had failed, but successful in the other larger plot Matres then moved to claim the title of Theologian Primus after returning to The Hallowed City and recounting how a terrorist cell had planted explosives and that all the other Theologians were dead including the Primus. This stood with some suspicion but was accepted and there seemed to be corroborating evidence confirming this by investigators at the scene of the explosion.   Matres came to The Hallowed City and much to Gath's surprise, obviously showed himself to live. A fierce debate and trial came to the fore and when evidence was presented of Gath's violations of holy law, he was quickly turned upon and killed for his heresy. And thus The Betrayal at the Gathering' was finished, and the many who had engineered what would have been the greatest coup seen in the history of the Church.   And so Matres, by manner of being the only remaining Theologian was overnight elevated to the Theologian Primus.
