Personal history

Born in the country of Morvol in the northern continent of Immithar, Dharma was a hunter of great renown. He had felled all manner of beasts, for his own glory and for that of his country, but soon he turned to hunting a different type of prey.

The half-elf ruler of Morvol, Ultaor, was not shy about his love for the finer things of life, and didn't exactly like to pay for it. That is to say: the slave trade was not only alive and well in Morvol, but that any and all were threatened by it if you questioned Ultaor.

Dharma had managed to keep his head down and be an asset to Ultaor, bringing him fine pelts and exotic talons, teeth, and claws. But one night, just as dawn was breaking, Dharma had a vision of the sun as a bird of immolation, sweeping towards him with all intent to burn him for his lack of care for fellow man.

He took on the mantle of the Great Owl, Belbrokk, and spent the last five years hunting Ultaor's men and slavemasters in the forests of Morvol, freeing those he could.

His actions have led to uprisings from the freed slaves (who have nothing more to lose) and the Morvol (who could at any moment lose everything, rebellion or not).

Ultaor has put a price out on Dharma's head that would be worth as much as a small kingdom. It's now about more than the money - it's the principle of Dharma's defiance.

Dharma worships Belbrokk, a chaotic good deity of freedom, wind and fire.

In Immithar, Belbrokk is not portrayed in a humanoid form, but as a large owl (sometimes wreathed, cloaked, or made of flames).

It is said that Belbrokk stole the sun from the creator god, Numenreth, in order to give the freedom of day to the people of Immithar. Perhaps that is why he has been locked away in endless sleep, with only his dreams to influence the realms.

Ultaor claims to have been the one to clip the Great Owl's wings, but there is no way to verify this.

Dharma is a paladin who has sworn the Oath of the Eagle. As such, he believes the following things:

  • Freedom Above All: None can reach the heights that the eagle does when they are chained to the ground. Fight slavery and imprisonment wherever you can, and oppose those tyrants who would restrict the freedoms of their people.
  • Shine as a Symbol: You are an example to others; just as you once gazed up to the skies and saw the soaring eagle above you, so too will others look up to you and see your deeds and triumphs. Always remember that you exemplify not only the tenets of your Oath, but all those of your order. Give those who look upon you something to aspire to.
  • Be a Relentless Hunter: Do not flag in your pursuit of your enemies. When you drive off slavers and tyrants, give them no chance to escape; pursue, and bring them down. The enemies of your order cannot be allowed to flee from the justice of your grasp.
  • Soar to the Greatest Heights: Always strive to achieve great things. Reach for the skies in all things, and never be satisfied with your deeds. There is always more to be done, and every triumph you complete elevates both you and the other members of your faith.

I worked the land, I love the land, and I will protect the land.

Flaws

The tyrant who rules my land will stop at nothing to see me killed.

Spellcasting. Dharma is a 9th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). He has following paladin spells prepared:

1st level (3 slots): feather fall, heroism, jump, searing smite

2nd level (3 slots): branding smite, gust of wind, lesser restoration, levitate, prayer of healing

3rd level (2 slots): daylight, fly, revivify, wind wall

Divine Health. Dharma is immune to disease.

Aura of Protection. Whenever Dharma or a friendly creature within 10 feet of him must make a saving throw, the creature gains a +3 bonus to the saving throw. He must be conscious to grant this bonus.

Aura of Speed. If a creature friendly to Dharma starts their turn within 10 feet of him, for that turn they can use the Dash action as a bonus action.

Actions

Divine Sense. Until the end of his next turn, Dharma can sense any celestials, fiends, or undead within 60 ft. of him. He knows the type, but not the identity. He can also sense any areas that are consecrated or unholy.

Lay on Hands. Dharma can touch a creature and restore health from a pool of 45 hit points. Alternatively, he can expend 5 points of healing to cure one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. He can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately for each one. This cannot be used on constructs or undead. This pool refills every long rest.

Multiattack. Dharma makes two attacks with his morningstar.

Morningstar. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage.

Divine Smite. Whenever Dharma hits a creature with a melee weapon attack, he can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon's damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend, to a maximum of 6d8.

Bonus Actions

Channel Divinity. When Dharma uses his Channel Divinity, he chooses between two options. He must then finish a short or long rest before using Channel Divinity again.

  • Sacred Hunt: Dharma sets his sights upon a single enemy, marking them as his prey. Choosing one enemy that he can see, Dharma can move up to 30 feet toward that enemy by the safest direct route without using any of his movement for the turn, before moving or taking any actions. This effect lasts for 1 minute and ends if the chosen enemy drops to 0 hit points or becomes unconscious.
  • Sight of the Eagle: For 1 minute, Dharma has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks related to sight, can see up to ten times as far away as normal, and has darkvision.

Aura of Speed. Dharma can use the Dash action as a bonus action.

Reactions

Interception. When wielding a shield or a simple or martial weapon, Dharma can reduce the damage someone takes by 1d10 + 4 within 5 feet of him (other than himself).
