A Meditation on the Planes

A learned wizard of times long past was able to open a permanent portal to the external planes, channeling their energy into batteries that could be utilized to power objects, spells, and even grant magical abilities to those who hold it in their possession.

But it is unstable, and I warn those who would look to take these powers onto themselves that holding the power of the planes at their fingertips is more than likely a recipe to find yourself at the mercy of the planes as well.

I am only aware of the Ephemeral Orb and the Celestial Orb, which draw power from the ethereal and celestial planes in particular. But it is reasonable to believe that there is one for every plane that exists, unless the creator grew bored of the project.
