Spire of Ruin
The Statue of Daqan in Archaut is another Monument of Mennara. While smaller copies of it appear all over the
baronies, the original in Archaut is truly massive, helping Archaut live up to its nickname, “Monument City”. This location is adapted from its appearance in the RUNEWARS game based in Mennara.
LOCATION
The Statue is just outside of the city proper, in Archaut, the functional capital of Terrinoth. It is truly massive and can easily be seen when approaching the city, or really from any point outside the city proper. Once inside Archaut, the walls and massive architecture often block sight of the statue, but it can still be seen often when in between buildings, even when in the city. This landmark is easily identified and seeing it leaves no doubt which city you are in. In non-Terrinoth campaigns, such a statue could easily be of a different king important to the history of the campaign.
HISTORY
The statue was begun shortly after King Daqan’s demise (or some say, disappearance). It took nearly a decade to complete and no doubt a bit of magic to keep the weight of the sword arm from pulling it down. To many in Terrinoth, seeing it and the rest of Archaut is something they aspire to do at least once before death. Nobody forgets their first time seeing the statue.
For all of its splendor however, it hides another purpose. The statue serves as a multi-level tower. The lower levels in the base serve as a retreat point for townspeople living outside of the city walls. The higher levels serve as the headquarters for the Secret Order of the Warden (or as some of those who know of it call it, Kein’s Order).
While the Citadel has routinely employed the services of adventurers, Warden Gravia Kein saw fit to formalize a more clandestine organization, one loyal to the Citadel and all of Terrinoth. Most of the core of the order is made up of highly trusted Marshals already in service to the Citadel. However, a handful of other adventurers, scholars, and even clergy also serve the Order. Few people are aware of the higher levels in the statue. The highest level has the eyes as windows (though it cannot be seen as such from the outside) and serves as the planning room for the Order.
POWERS OF THE STATUE
The statue has another purpose when it comes to the defense of Archaut. The base is made so the statue can be rotated (albeit very slowly). This is done with the aid of two Rune Golems (see page 154 of the REALMS OF TERRINOTH sourcebook). This ability serves a purpose, as the outstretched sword is actually a powerful Rune Cannon, powered by one of the rare Stars of Timmorran. While some GMs may want to stat this weapon, it suffices to say any vehicle, siege engine or small unit (2 score men or less) is utterly destroyed by a beam from the weapon. Though it is recommended to take time between uses (and can only be moved slowly). The arm can be raised and lowered as well (but equally as slowly).
INHABITANTS
Inside the statue, characters would encounter members of the Order. Most commonly, these individuals will be Marshals in service to the Citadel (see the Baronial Knight entry on page 150 of the RoT sourcebook). Other adventurers may also be present. Their goals would be to subdue, capture, and question intruders.
ADVENTURE SEEDS
The Statue can be used in a campaign in a variety of ways. The following Adventure Seeds provide ways to introduce the location. • Warden Gravia Kein could recruit the adventurers (on a trial basis) into the Order, sending them on a task to test their mettle. Upon joining, they’d be admitted to the levels within the statue. • During an annual Council of the Barons meeting, some Barons have noticed Warden Kein often going in and out of the statue. It seems odd given the statue’s purpose (a redoubt). One or more of them ask the PCs to investigate. • The group finds a small statuette in the same likeness as the Statue of Daqan. When gripping the statuette and thinking of the one in Archaut, the room begins to spin, and the group finds itself in the highest level of the statue, looking out of the eye windows.
