Fountain of Purity
HISTORY
The Fountain is fed by a spring and is rumored to have been in place about the same time Elves came on the scene. When first discovered, the Elves lost many lives to the Forest Guardians of the glade before realizing what was being protected. The Elven Wealdweavers of Ethana were able to befriend the Guardians and pledged to help protect the fountain from others. Over time, the agreement became a friendship, and the Elves were granted access to use the magical waters from the fountain themselves.
POWERS OF THE FOUNTAIN
The Fountain’s waters are extremely magical. Freely given by those tending the fountain, the waters can cure any illness, drive out madness, and fully heal wounds and injuries, even restoring a bit of youth to the imbiber. Legend states it even has the power to return a corrupted Uthuk human again. However, once a draught has been used in this way, another will not have such power until the following sunrise. Conversely, water taken from the fountain by force behaves differently. The imbiber appears to rot from within. Each round, the imbiber must make a Hard ( ) Resilience check or suffer 3 damage. If the victim is able to make 3 successful Resilience checks, they have fought off the effects (though will still have any damage suffered). No doubt, those guarding the fountain will use the opportunity to defend themselves and the fountain. It is important to note that the water loses its magical ability if not used before the next sunrise.
INHABITANTS
The Fountain is protected by a formidable array of guardians. First and foremost are its Forest Guardians. These creatures are detailed on page 179 of the REALMS OF TERRINOTH supplement. In other settings, they are commonly known as Treants (though the “Ents” of Terrinoth are a slightly larger version of these creatures).
Another group of defenders are the Elven Wealdweavers. Many believe the songs of the Wealdcallers were responsible for the awakening of the first trees in Aymhelin and weaving their roots into the vast Elven forest it has become. These Elves are reminiscent of both spiritspeakers and bards as they use the magic of song to speak to nature itself. They have the same statistics as the Storm Sorceress on page 180 of the REALMS OF TERRINOTH supplement, but with different Abilities and Spells. In other settings, druids would be a near equivalent. Full statistics are in the Adversaries section at the end of this book.
Additional defenders include a handful of the Darnati Order. These sword-wielding monks (also known as the Swordmasters) speak only in hand gestures and are deadly opponents. In other settings, they are Elves who combine martial arts moves with exquisite swordsmanship and discipline (such as Bladedancers). In Terrinoth, they are nearly a blend of Monk and Skirmisher, wielding two flashing, deadly blades in movements that resemble dancing more than swordplay. Most would be surprised to learn the Darnati Order is dedicated to Teth’loran, the Elven god of peace. However, one glance at their holy symbol (a blue waterfall on a green background), and it is easy to see why a contingent of the order would be charged with guarding the fountain. Full statistics are in the Adversaries section at the end of this book.
The final protectors of the fountain are a contingent of Deepwood Archers. Statistics for these can be found on page 179 of the REALMS OF TERRINOTH sourcebook. In other settings, Elven archers would fill the same role.
ADVENTURE SEEDS
The Fountain can be used in a campaign in a variety of ways. The following Adventure Seeds provide ways to introduce the location.
• One of the Player Characters, or a beloved NPC, local ruler, or other person of importance has contracted a magical illness and they have not responded to any healing treatments or magic to cure the ailment. The group learns of the healing powers of the fountain and seeks it out.
• The group is sent as bodyguards for a delegation to the Elves to trade for a draught from the fountain. They are shown the fountain and given a demonstration of its power, but the Elves ask for a task as part of the trade... something only the group can perform.
• Magical portals exist all over Mennara; in long- forgotten temples, libraries, and tombs. The six Monuments of Mennara are likely destinations for such portals, and the group could find themselves at the fountain after using such an unknown portal.
It should be noted non-Elves are rarely given access to the fountain, and then only after establishing a deep degree of trust.
