The Shadowfell
The Shadowfell, originally called the Shadow Rift, was allegedly created when Shar combined part of the Plane Of Shadow with energy from the Negative Energy Plane. Shar's creation of this plane came as a surprise to the already existing populations of Shadow Fey and various other shadow creatures, who found their realm suddenly expanded and under the assumed rule of an evil deity.
"[Shar's Shadowfell] is the toxic plane of darkness and power. It is the hidden place that hates the light. It is the frontier of worlds unknown. " (Manual Of The Planes)
The rift yawns open like a wound in the world. It is a chasm of endless twilight where the land itself seems to have been swallowed. Black vapors coil within its depths, mirroring the Plane of Shadow but darker and heavier. As though despair itself had taken form.

The Shadowfell has the following traits:
- Magically morphic. Certain spells modify the base material of the Shadowfell. The utility and power of these spells within the Shadowfell make them particularly useful for explorers and natives alike.
- Mildly evil-aligned.
- Minor negative-dominant areas
- Enhanced magic. Spells with the shadow descriptor are enhanced in the Shadowfell. Such spells are cast as though they were prepared with the Maximize Spell feat, though they don’t require the higher spell slots.
- Specific spells become more powerful im the Shadowfell. Shadow conjuration and shadow evocation spells are 30% as powerful as the conjurations and evocations they mimic (as opposed to 20%). Greater shadow conjuration and greater shadow evocation are 70% as powerful (not 60%), and a shades spell conjures at 90% of the power of the original (not 80%).
- Impeded magic. Spells that use or generate light or fire may fizzle when cast in the Shadowfell. A spellcaster attempting a spell with the light or fire descriptor must succeed on a Spellcraft check (DC 20 + the level of the spell). Spells that produce light are less effective in general, because all light sources have their ranges halved in the Shadowfell.
No mortal who has descended into the gloom has ever returned, yet things do emerge: pale phantoms, shadow-scarred beasts, and twisted shapes that only belong to the darkness. Some whisper the Shadowfell is not merely a place but a ravenous abyss, a breach into a realm where light is forgotten and evil reigns.
