Vargarro Moraqos
Gonfaloniere of Lys, Patrician of Moraqos Vargarro Moraqos
History
Vargarro had the ambitions typical of any man from Lys. When the First Magister passed away, he couldn’t watch as another seized the opportunity. It’d been centuries since a member of House Moraqos was First Magister, and he wanted nothing more than to be the one to put an end to that streak. Thus, he started his ascent up the rungs of the conclave. House Moraqos spent their meticulously saved wherewithals on his grandiose campaign, yet, it was clear midway through that he was the third runner-up to win the seat. Unlikely to win, he withdrew from the election, throwing his support behind the second runner-up, a man we know as Moredo Rogare. It’s said Moredo promised financial assistance in the form of loans to the Moraqos following their disastrously expensive campaign, as well as the seat of Gonfaloniere. Shortly after Moredo’s victory he followed through with his promises, and Vargarro became Gonfaloniere. Vargarro now commanded the armies of Lys, from the Sellswords of foreign lands to the soldiery of the Disputed Lands. Yet, it was a rather sterile position. Sparingly can we look throughout Lysene history and point out when the armies of Lys were used. The navy of Lys was far more active and necessary than their landed counterparts, until 422 AC. In 422 AC a meeting between the First Magister & the Conclave occurred. Shortly after, they would declare a crisis and the mobilization of Lys’s armies would begin. Gonfalonier Vargarro was given the task of defeating the Hazdahn Khalasar. Leading the Lysene army he marched to meet his enemies at Pentos. It was on the 10th day of the 6th Moon where he'd finally made it to the fields outside the capital of the Freehold. His army would rest and awaken before sunrise, organizing themselves for battle. At sunrise on the 11th day of the 6th Moon Khal Kraluh began a battle with Gonfaloniere Vargarro to decide the fate of Essos. Both commanders led their armies in the fields outside Pentos, and a bloodbath ensued. It was at midday when the Company of the Cat sallied from Pentos and attacked the Dothraki’s unsuspecting ranks. In a moment of desperation to turn the tide, the Khal would seek out the Gonfaloniere of Lys in single combat. At the height of the battle both men dueled, and it was Vargarro who emerged victorious. The next day Vargarro Moraqos declared the Dothraki threat in Essos to be over. To date this was his first and last military campaign, and from the aftermath he recovered a great deal of plunder, offering House Moraqos much needed capital to maneuver in The Free City of Lys. Nowadays he’s all but retired from public life. He spends his leisurely time hunting & fishing on his land as well as enjoying the company of his family in their private estates. Some say he’s grown too old, too lazy, too arrogant. Murmurs have started that a new Gonfaloniere is needed, but he cares not for the idle words of outsiders gazing from afar. For as long as Lys calls upon its Gonfaloniere, he shall always answer.
