Personal history
Death had a wealthy and comfortable upbringing. He was born into the Varynis royal family that ruled the city of Valinor. He was born into a beautiful world of life and joy, untouched by evil. He from a young age, adored the natural landscape around him. Death wanted nothing more than to capture the beauty of nature, and thus aspired to become a great artist. He had access to many colorful paints because of his rich family, that he used to paint beautiful pieces of art, usually of the natural scenery.
Unfortunately Valinor was not in great condition. The citizens were being taken advantage of by the nobility and the town was quickly degrading in status, causing the town to see him as a wandering noble that wasted his time with expensive inks and dyes. Death stayed out of the slums, never caring much for interacting with people, he found peace with nature and didn't like meddling in others business, but other wanted to meddle with his.
Because Death was part of the Varynis family, the people of Valinor lumped him in with the problems that his family was causing. Death knew nothing of his family's wrongdoings but faced the consequences. One day while he was wandering the forest, looking for a scene to paint, he got beaten and captured by a dozen angry people of Valinor. He was dragged to the town, his legs and arms bound by rope, and hung by his neck. While death swayed in the wind, hung by his neck, the people of Valinor chanted and screamed to the gods for his life to leave him, and they got what they wanted. For the first time in this world, somebody had died. The town was shocked, scared, and excited all at once. They had created a phenomenon that drained the life of an individual, and later named it after the first affected, Death.
From then on Death occured to more in the town, and people believed it was Death's anger that reached out and stole people from their lives, a curse they had brought upon themselves. Soon after death spread, people fled. They were scared of the town because Death wandered, but Death followed. Slowly over time, Death was spread across the globe and became a natural and understood law. Few even know that a time existed before death.
Death's story didn't end here though. The gods had not thought of death as a concept yet, so they were not prepared to deal with this Varynis boy. His soul was pulled from his body but not given a direction. No god knew how to deal with souls, they didn't know how to control them, or where to put them even if they could. So Death's soul drifted across the border ethereal, looking at the world he knew, but through a blurry haze. His world was also falling apart, the town he grew up in became abandoned, the forests withered, and the world became more cold.
Death lived a lonely world on the border ethereal for a long time, stuck behind the veil. Over time though, more people showed up, stuck behind the same veil. He led these people, was a recognized person of knowledge and understanding. He had been around longer than anybody else and gave these people hope, hope for escape. He led people across the globe, searching for an answer, and he found it, magic. Death discovered this weave of energy that allowed people to bend the laws that bound them, contort the world to their will, so he studied. Death studied for years and years, learning arcane spellcasting but could never harness enough power to cross the veil, so he called upon his people. He called upon every person with magical talent and asked for their power, in exchange for a chance for escape. It took 14 mages along with Death to harness enough energy to tear the veil, but only temporarily and they crossed. Death and 14 mages had finally escaped and saw color once again, felt the warm sun on their skin, and no blurry fog surrounded them. It was overwhelming for them all but some could not bear it and were driven mad. 7 of the mages descended into madness because they felt vulnerable, the warm feeling on the skin felt intrusive and the clear vision made them feel exposed. These 7 killed themselves in a crazed outbreak. The other 7 and Death continued forward with a new goal, get revenge against the gods.
The gods had betrayed Death and his mages, they had stripped his life from him and locked him behind a misty veil, just out of reach of the world. Death knew a lot about the world but nothing about how to kill a god, but he searched and searched, and commanded his 7 mages to do the same and report to him. To this day he is searching for a way to get his revenge, he is grown strong with arcane power, magical items, and growing armies, but hasn't touched a god yet.
