Red Wizards
When one speaks of Red Wizards, one is most likely referring to merchants who specialize in scrolls, magic items, and sometimes, illicit substances and questionable trade goods. Some of the continent's major cities are home to a small enclave of Red Wizards, men and women who make a living transcribing spell scrolls and performing minor magical services for a fee. Most people do not fully trust the Red Wizards due to their dark origins, but none can deny that the organisation is vital in reclaiming the knowledge lost during the age of conquest.
The Red Wizards have their origin as political refugees. Formerly the ruling caste of Thay, their ancestors enjoyed immense wealth and power. However, a coup in their homeland during the Age of Conquest saw many of their members slain, with those whom would not bend knee to the new ruler fleeing the nation. Taking refuge in various cities, they survived by selling their arcane services. Today, the Red Wizards are primarily known as a mercantile network of mages and crafters. Due to the passage of time and loss of resources many of their members can't even qualify as true arcanists anymore.
There have been attempts in the past by the Red Wizards to reclaim their former home. However, none of these have succeeded, with each attempt claiming many lives. As time passes, very few Red Wizards remain with direct roots in Thay, as necessity often requires the induction of outsiders.
