The Wellspring

I would tell you, students, of the dedication and years of training you will have to undertake to master even the simplest of magic, but you would not listen. No, you think that it's unfair that you have to study so hard and practice so much, when the so called Pact-Bound souls are innately capable of such feats. Well, children, be that as it may, the truth remains. We perform this dedication, this intense study of the arcane arts as a gift of loyalty to The Wellspring. Ah, I see that piqued some of your interests. Pray tell, children: Do you know of The Wellspring?

Summary

The Wellspring myth tells a short basic story of the spread of magic in the world. It began with a girl, who could gift magic to others, and ended with a man who took that gift and betrayed the girl.

Historical Basis

It's unclear whether or not the myth is based on any form of fact, and indeed there's not a whole lot of other myths that reference The Wellspring outside of her granting either a person or a revered being magic in exchange for a gift of some kind. The only notable myth mentioning her is the Myth of the Twin-Soul she is mentioned there as the being that gave the Demon King Ithysmael his magic, and who was then later betrayed when Ithysmael gave his magic to Morrigan during the first Twin-Soul Ritual

Spread

The Wellspring is not a well-known myth anymore. Some schools of magic teach about it at the beginning of a mage's journey to instill a sense of what exactly the reason behind it taking years of study to master the basics and a sense of what exactly is to come of one who defies the tradition or uses their magic for evil--to instill a sense of fear over becoming a cursebearer.

Variations & Mutation

There's only two known variations of the myth, and those simply are two versions that differ in whether or not the myth calls the cursebearer a man (human) or simply "He", the original version refers to the cursebearer as simply He, for it is a fact--though not well known--that the cursebearer is in actuality Demon King Ithysmael.

In Literature

Only works that center around the Twin-Souls Myth (Also known as the Myth of the Goddess or Morrigan's Myth) tend to mention The Wellspring, simply because of how rare knowledge of the myth tends to be.
