The Black Court

The Black Court is the hive beneath the Father. Four Hive Commanders rule quadrants of Setovia, each with five lieutenants — the Brood Court of Twenty.

They meet in the Obsidian Throne. Commanders sit on lesser thrones, their broods arrayed behind them. Lestat presides in silence, and silence is law.

Lestat Set – The Progenitor King

The First Fang, the Father of the Nightborn. His blood is the source of every vampire. His will thrums in their veins.

Appearance:
Robes of ash-gray trimmed crimson, silver hair like falling ash, ember-red eyes smoldering beneath soot-dark brows. His pallid flesh glows faintly red when his fury stirs. His presence bends reality: he does not walk, the world rearranges around him.

He rules from the Obsidian Throne, fortress-palace whose spires pierce the Crown itself. To mortals, he is savior. To vampires, father. To all, tyrant eternal.

Myths of His Origin
  • The First Man: The first mortal, cursed for arrogance, eternal in blood.
  • The Sun’s Betrayal: Dawn-priest who defied his god, cast into shadow.
  • The Ashborn: Born of the first funeral pyre.
  • The Phoenix’s Shadow: Devoured a dying phoenix’s soul, stealing its eternity.

Cults and Worship
  • Mortals: revere him as Savior of Flesh.
  • Vampires: call him Eternal Father.
  • Shrines: burn ash-dust candles, prayers whispered, “Father, keep the sun away. Father, keep the blood flowing.”

Even the Black Court whispers: If Lestat dies, the Crown falls — unless his mantle is passed.

Rumors and Whispers
  • “His throne is carved from his own petrified flesh.”
  • “The Crown itself is his shadow.”
  • “Drink his blood, and you are eternal among immortals. Drink too much, and you are ash.”
  • “He hears his name in every whisper.”
  • “He cannot die — when slain, his soul seeps into another of his brood.”

Children’s Rhyme

“The Father walks, the Father sees,
The Father drinks what Father frees.
Count your blood, and count it well,
For Father knows, and Father tells.”

The Black Court

The Black Court is the ruling body of Setovia, a city only fifty years old yet already drowned in blood. It is divided among four Progenitors, each the mother of a Brood that shapes one quarter of the city. Together they form the Hive — a union of Faith, War, Shadow, and Science — but their rivalries make Setovia as dangerous within as it is without.

Rituals of the Court
  • The Blood Council: Each season, mortals are drained and their blood mingled in chalices drunk by all.
  • The Oath of Ash: Yearly branding of each lieutenant with molten-ash sigils.
  • The Silence of Shadows: Traitors are delivered to Nyxielle; their voices cut away, their bodies dissolved into the Crown.

Rivalries

  • Seraphine vs. Nyxielle: War mocks shadow as cowardice; shadow mocks war as stupidity.
  • Marcelline vs. Valessia: Faith scorns science as soulless; science mocks faith as superstition.
  • The Broods: Lieutenants scheme constantly, trading secrets and soldiers, shifting alliances sealed in blood.

Marcelline Draemora – The Crimson Matriarch The Hive’s Voice (Faith)

Order in Hive: The First – Heir of the Ash-Bond, closest to Lestat.

Crimson eyes burn with predatory allure. She is draped in a crimson gown, embroidered with black serpents and roses, both elegant and ominous.

Presence: Regal, commanding, and dangerously alluring — Marcelline embodies the heart of the Black Court. She is a queen and an executioner, her beauty sharpened into a weapon.

Role: The matriarch and political mind, Marcelline is the spider at the center of the web. She lures, commands, and manipulates with equal skill, ensuring the Black Court’s dominion never falters.
Forces: Vampire clerics, necromancers, choir-thralls, sacrificial cultists.
Tactics: Enthralling hymns, ritual sacrifices, mass ceremonies to break wills.

Brood Theme: The Scarlet Choir — all female, all fanatical.

Cyras Blood Psalm – The Siren of Hymns

Appearance: Cyras is ethereal, with silver hair cascading in waves, and throat covered in glowing hymn-sigils that pulse when she sings. Her eyes bleed faint tears, giving her a sorrowful beauty. Her robes are layered with torn choir sashes, stitched into flowing garments that shimmer like sound waves.

Personality: Gentle, almost maternal, but with a fanatic certainty. She speaks in a soft, melodic cadence, every word measured like a note in a hymn. To her, even cruelty is part of a holy chorus.

Origin: Once the most beloved temple singer of a sun-worshiping choir, Cyras’ voice was said to bring rain to fields and heal sorrow. When the temple was razed, she stood upon the altar and sang until her throat was ruined by smoke. Marcelline found her dying — and gave her eternity. Now her song praises only blood.

  • Enthralling Hymns – She can hypnotize mortals with her song.
  • Resonance of Despair – Weakens enemies’ will in combat.
  • Hymnal Shatter – With a sustained note, can break holy wards and shatter glass, bones, or minds.

Althara Graveveil – The Relic Corrupter

Appearance: Permanently wrapped in decayed funeral shrouds, her face is unseen, her hands blackened and cracked. Chains clink behind her, dragging relics profaned in her touch.

Personality: Obsessive, reverent in desecration. She speaks rarely, in hushed tones, as if every word is a blasphemy offered to the Hive.

Origin: Once a nun entombed alive for heresy, she clawed at her coffin until her fingers broke. Marcelline unearthed her body decades later, whispering resurrection into her lungs. The shrouds of her grave remain her only clothing.

Abilities:

  • Relic Profanation – Can corrupt holy icons instantly into cursed objects.
  • Desecrating Aura – Sanctified ground becomes barren in her presence.
  • Reliquary Chains – Relics she drags can radiate fear or plague.

Personality: Ecstatic, frenzied, forever on the brink of violent sermon. Her words tumble in torrents, half incoherent, half divine. She believes herself the true prophet of Setovia.

Origin: A desert prophetess, she was declared false and stoned by her own disciples. When her body lay broken, Marcelline gave her the tongue of shadow, her black fork now a banner of blasphemy.

Abilities:

  • Mob Frenzy – She can incite riots of mortals with words alone.
  • Tongue of Blight – Venom-laced tongue can spread disease with a lick or kiss.
  • Voice of the Pyre – Her shouts cause spontaneous fires to ignite.

Domain: Sermon Steps – Towering stairs leading to nowhere, their walls scorched by riot fires. Bloodstains never fade from the stones, echoing eternally with phantom chants.

Isolde Nightspire – The Bone Cantor

Appearance: Veiled in black, her back bristles with organ pipes carved from bone. Her hands are skeletal, her mouth stained with ash. When she speaks, it is with the hollow timbre of a funeral hymn.

Personality: Detached, cold, precise. To her, death is harmony, and her choirs are perfect compositions. She cares little for individuals; only the chorus matters.

Origin: The organist of Marcelline’s cathedral in life. When her congregation was slaughtered, she did not flee but played their requiem until her own heart failed. Marcelline raised her for her devotion.

Abilities:

  • Choirs of the Dead – Conducts choirs of undead whose voices amplify psychic resonance.
  • Bone Resonance – Pipes of bone channel destructive harmonics.
  • Canticle of Silence – Can smother all sound within her domain.
