Gelb Caravan Culture
The Gelb Caravans and their associated culture belong to the desert. They are the leftovers of a way of life that was those once thriving trade routes. Now the caravans wander the desert edges as entities to themselves, almost completely forgotten about by the rest of fae society.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
The caravans speak the same fae as the rest of the continent, although the slang of the cities youth and more learned vocabulary of the universities cannot be found here. They do have an abbreviated system of writing numbers, used for trade and inventory that is near incomprehensible chicken scratch to outsiders.
Culture and cultural heritage
As a completely mobile people, there is no permanent architecture of the Caravans. All of their shelters, made of thick tented carpets and animal hides, get rolled up and carried with them during the day. They travel with circular topped, covered wagons, pulled by camels that carry their goods, and these wagons will have a rolled-up carpet flap on the side that can be quickly unsecured to create a quick shelter for them and their pack animals in case of a sudden dust storm.
Shared customary codes and values
Trade and commerce are law to the caravans. They will do anything for the almighty dollar. They will sell or trade anything and are always picking up or foraging items left behind of the caravan trails, fixing them up, and reselling them back in the city. They will barter for anything, and think those who do not barter back with them as weaker people to be manipulated. They are always focused on getting the best deal out of any equation.
The Caravans are also people of the desert. They highly respect their environment, believing that they should leave nothing behind but their footprints. They believe that nature is the work of an angry Creator, and not respecting nature (especially in the form of not preparing for dust storms, and polluting the environment) is seen as a slap in the face to the Creator.
Common Dress code
Because of the heat of the desert, the clothing worn by the caravans tends to be white (or a light sun-bleached color). The clothing is worn loose, covering almost every inch of the body (preventing unnecessary water loss and protecting against the elements). They tend to favor long sleeves that fall completely over the hands, long flowy pants that tuck into sturdy boots, vests with high collars that cover all of the neck, and loose head-covering the hairline and ears and get pulled over the nose so that only the eyes are exposed. Many people of the caravans also wear or carry goggles with them for withstanding dust storms.
Major organizations
The caravans of the Umbragelb Desert are essentially their own faction, not being tightly controlled by either the Shadow King (they are not on his boat route) or by the StarRise Kingdom (too far away from the capital). The Head Star Seeker out of the Rose City has some control over them, but most caravans are units to themselves, with no outside influence or control.
