Southern Myths - Sqʷn̓ečstm

The Great Burning

Sqʷn̓ečstm myths beleive that all animals used to live peacefully on Kaveto Mountain. The Sqʷn̓ečstm were known as tricksters among the animals and would pull of friendly tricks where everyone would have a good time. However, one trick went too far. Qeqyux̌ lit a fire that burned the valley that the animals lived in, casuing them to all flee down the mountain to their safety. The stories disagree if this fire was intentional or accidental, but they all agree that Qeqyux̌ perished in the fire.

The First Trick

The first known trick was unleashing the Sqʷn̓ečstm upon the world. Sometimes, this is how the Sqʷn̓ečstm came to exist on the top of Kaveto Mountain. Other times, this is how the Sqʷn̓ečstm escaped the fire on the mountain. Regardless, most versions have a Sqʷn̓ečstm called Cimi̓nis leading everyone down a river until they found a series of large, habital lakes. They then settled in the lakes and started pulling tricks on the rest of the world.
