Southern Myths - Amikwànò

The Kichi Amik

The secretive nature of the Amikwànò amongst all of their kind comes from the myth of the Kichi Amik who led them out of the chaos of the top of Kaveto Mountain and to their current home south of the mountains. They only survived due to the sneaky means used to separate themselves from the other animals as they were all descending the mountain.

The Ojige and Enàkweh

The Ojige and Enàkweh are the names of the two classes of Amikwànò today, the builders and the engineers. These are also the names of the original builder and engineer from the top of Kaveto Mountain. The groups use the names both as a name to call themselves, but also to appeal to a higher power.   Amikwànò builders will use The Ojige’s name for blessings. They might greet each other with “The Ojige’s blessings” or praise The Ojige when a project goes well. However, when things go wrong, they make exclamations in The Enàkweh’s name, such as “The Enàkweh’s curse is on us” if a beam falls and nearly kills a worker.
