Thorn Mace

Thorn mace is a carnivorous plant that is capable of killing Medium or smaller creatures and using their decomposing corpses as fertilizer. It is unclear if it is actually a monster or a naturally occuring plant.

Description

Appearance

A thorn mace, it forms large, dense rosettes of grey-green, strap-like leaves edged with hooked spines. The green or yellow flowers are borne on spikes which resemble a medieval mace, and stand up to 7ft high. Spreading by offsets, thorn maces can colonise large areas over time. The outer two-thirds of the leaf blade bears outward-pointing spines which may be an adaptation to prevent herbivores from reaching the center of the plant.

History

These plants grow in arid regions of Malgrave, typically feeding on the wildlife that try to eat the flowers or using it as a place to rest. They are often seen with skeletal remains either still wrapped in the stem, or scattered about the base of the plant. While dangerous, they are not difficult to prune and harvest for those with experience with them. Their stems have often been harvested and dried, shaving the thorns off the main stalk to create maces or morningstars. The fibers in the leaves can also be used to weave durable fibers, often used for making fishing nets.
