The newly-born High Spirits were really, really bad at their jobs in the beginning

It's tough adjusting to godhood. While the High Spirits struggled to learn how to control their power, all lands and creatures suffered. The world had no balance. No-heartbeat creatures ran amok causing more chaos. High Spirits conscious of themselves did whatever they pleased, not matter the consequences. Humans were nearly completely wiped out.   The Sun Spirit saved them. He learned to control his power and taught the other High Spirits how to do so as well. He became the leader of the High Spirits. All creatures knew his name. But he didn't bother to actively/visibly rule, and all creatures had free rein. The world was balanced, but its peoples were not. It's said that magic saturated the land and children conversed with spirits like friends, that creatures half-spirit half-flesh wandered and diseases spread like wildfire. So many wild, impossible, beautiful things happened, that stories are still told about them, despite how long ago they occurred.   Most stories about the Coyote are from this period.
