River Spirit

The River Spirit is the High Spirit of all the rivers in the lands. Most of her sapience is concentrated in the major river running from the western mountain range across the grasslands, emptying into the east sea. Each season she is more conscious in different areas. In spring, the west grasslands, in summer the east grasslands, and in autumn she travels back to the mountains to sleep in a frozen lake high in the western mountains throughout the winter. Once the Moon Spirit switches his mask and the spring moon shines, her lake melts and she flows down again, the cycle reborn.

Divine Domains

The rivers

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Spiral, like a snail shell

Holidays

She's celebrated most often in the summer, when her waters are warm and still flowing (her major river, at least) despite the heat and lack of rainfall.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Do her job as High Spirit of rivers and do it well.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

She's a swimmer so she's very fit and strong, and also very flexible. She's short and chubby. She's also blind, but she can feel motion in the water and sense what made it, kinda like echolocation except not.

Body Features

Brown skin crisscrossed with old, thin scars and marks. Her shoulders look a little like cracked stone, pale lines crawling up her neck and down her arms.

Facial Features

She's known to be very beautiful.

Identifying Characteristics

She has the Mountain Spirit's symbol (jagged mountain line with a straight line splitting the peaks) tattooed across her shoulder blades.

Physical quirks

She's incredibly graceful in water and incredibly clumsy on land. Even just standing in a stream, she moves with a poise and lightness that makes the wind jealous, but the moment she steps on shore she's likely to fall on her face.

Special abilities

As a High Spirit she controls the rivers.   Her animal form is a moose.

Apparel & Accessories

She wears a buckskin dress heavily decorated with glass beads and porcupine quills, designed in swirls and curls like the river's current.

Specialized Equipment

She carries a double-sided paddle and often travels in a bullboat.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

She was in love with the Mountain Spirit and ever since he died she's been in mourning. When she cries, the rivers flood, and when she feels nothing the rivers dry.

Gender Identity

Female, she/her

Sexuality

Bisexual

Employment

Her job is to oversee the rivers, make sure water gets to all regions of the grasslands. She's not very reliable though.

Mental Trauma

The Mountain Spirit's death hurt her bad.

Taboos

She's sworn to never love again.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

She wants to be helpful, to make people smile, to be useful. To have a purpose, and to be recognized for her efforts. Whenever she makes the rivers flood or dry out, she feels terribly guilty and beats herself up about it, because she figures that she was made for this one purpose, and if she can't do that then what good is she?

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Excellent swimmer, horrible walker.

Likes & Dislikes

She secretly loves dancing but is too embarrassed to do so. She does not like dry land. She loves seafood but only gets to try some in late summer/early autumn, when she's closest to the east sea. She actually hates traveling and hates that she's in constant motion. She'd like some stability in her life, some roots.

Virtues & Personality perks

She tries really hard and is very earnest about her job, very eager to please. She responds pretty quick to prayers if she's not drowning in mourning. She's willing to work hard, to serve, to share some love and joy, to sacrifice her wants and needs for you. Very selfless and self-sacrificing. She just wants to make you smile.

Vices & Personality flaws

She can be snobbish and prideful, look down on others if she feels they don't care enough about what she considers important. She's a little dumb and is easily manipulated into doing things. She's got no backbone. Her low self-esteem makes her compare herself to others, often judging them or herself, which can make her jealous of others.   She's pretty lonely, feels pretty weak compared to the other High Spirits. She's a little power-hungry, though she doesn't know it. If she had access to more power, if she knew she could control more things without any real bad consequences, she would become obsessed with it.   If she were a deadly sin she'd be envy.

Personality Quirks

She plays with her hair almost constantly. She snorts when she laughs.

Hygiene

She washes daily and hates being dirty.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Her closest friend is the Moon Spirit's servant, the Dancer, but they don't see each other very often because the Dancer's stationed in the seas.

Family Ties

She sees the Grass Spirit as kinda her distant aunt.

Social Aptitude

Extroverted, loves spending time with others, but can be oddly shy and socially anxious a lot.

Hobbies & Pets

She has a pet tortoise who swims with her.

History

They were lovers for a short time only, just a few winters before the Mountain Spirit was killed and the River Spirit left heartbroken. Because of their broken romance, the River Spirit has sworn to never love again.   Their courtship was not a healthy one.

Legal Status

The Sun Spirit did not approve of their relationship, as the first time they loved, it messed with the seasons and resulted in a late spring and bad drought. The Sun Spirit allowed them to be lovers, as long as they continued to do their jobs.
