Horse Bonding
Horse bonding is comparable to a half-binding occurring between a human and a grassland horse rather than a human and spirit as in spirit binding. It can occur between just a human and horse, called a heart bond, or as a three-way connection between human, horse, and spirit, known as a high bond.
The Makkah spirit binders use horse binding a lot in combat and train in it extensively, as it gives them an advantage in battle against hania full-binders of the mountain tribe.
Effect
In a heart bond, the rider's and horse's heartbeats match up exactly, becoming one. This allows for a passage of energy and intentions, so they can lend another energy/strength and, to a slight degree, read another's emotions and thoughts. The rider and horse move and think in sync, meaning near-perfect communication and cooperation.
In a high bond, the bound spirit lends its spiritual energy to both the rider and horse, allowing for the horse to have access to the same benefits as a human would in a regular half-binding. Both horse and rider are faster and stronger while the bond lasts.
Side/Secondary Effects
The only common side effect seen in heart bonding is a closer connection between horse and rider, though a heart or high bond can only be achieved when trust has previously been built for both participants.
When in a half-binding, the human has to give up a certain aspect of theirself (memory, sense of smell, emotion, etc.) in exchange for the bound spirit's energy. Humans still have to do this for the high bond. Horses, on the other hand, in a high bond do not seem to need the same, perhaps due to their distant High Spirit heritage.
Manifestation
The human's and horse's heartbeat become one. The bonders can feel it throughout their entire body.
In a high bond, spiritual energy fills both horse and rider.
Source
Horse bonding is only possible if a horse is present, usually ridden or at least touching. High bonds are only possible in addition to a half-binding.
Discovery
Humans and horses have been heart bonding for a long, long time. Only when the Makkah spirit binders were formed as an official organization was high bonding discovered and utilized.

Gestures & Ritual
A helpful trick is to place your palm on a spot where the horse's pulse is particularly strong, like behind the jaw or foreleg.
Effect Duration
If startled or otherwise disrupted, the hearts may get out of sync, which will end the bond until the heartbeats align again.
Range
Humans typically have to be touching the horse to bond, usually when riding or feeling the horse's pulse
Applied Restriction
If a horse doesn't trust the rider or vice versa, there's no way their hearts will sync up, so no bond.
