  Description:
The Spectans canis four eyestalks are their most distinctive characteristic. The eyestalks are flexible boneless organs, capable of movement in 360º and retreating into the eye-sockets in the skull. The extra eye-sockets reduces the length of the ear canal, making their hearing relatively poor. Their day and night vision are nearly identical and they can switch to heat vision in complete darkness. The eyes emanate a low glow visible in darkness, a greenish glow at night and a reddish glow when using heat vision. The back molars on their upper jaw contain a cavity filled with a unique paralyzing poison.
Spectans canis have a long history as companions of Magic-Folk, and are mentioned in an 8th century grimoire. Aside from being excellent watch dogs, their poison was an important ingredient in potions.
Partly because of their close connection to Magic-Folk, Spectans canis have been hunted by witch and monster hunters and were eradicated by the 15th century. Thankfully, during The Departure, a few Fae took their Spectans canis with them, which made it possible to reintroduce the species into our world.
