Maia Moth

The Maia Moth is native to Corre'nas Verai.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The moth is typically the size of a human hand, it is not uncommon that it is smaller. With gray wings and silver irredescent undersides.

Genetics and Reproduction

The moth reproduces sexually, and lays eggs on the underside of Fandronde leaves. When the eggs hatch, small green caterpillars crawl to the end of the leave, and weave their cacoon out Maian silk threads. A week later, they emerge as moths.

Ecology and Habitats

Maia Moths live mild tempertures and relatively open spaces. They're dependent on the Fandronde Trees to lay their eggs, as only those leaves can nourish the caterpillar properly. At twilight, they rise into the air in search of food to return between three and five in the morning to the trees. The rising of the moths is known as the Grayshade, which describes what it looks like when millions and millions flutter into the air at dusk.

Additional Information

Domestication

Moth Traps often set outside homes, where they leave cut fruit for the mothes to eat, and then collect them. However, while the traps are meant to kill the mothes, many people simply leave out fruit without a trap for the mothes to eat.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The silk of the cacoon is very precious to the natives of the valley, who spin it into fine cloth. This silk, which is known to be incredibly light and breathable, and under moonlight, can glow. Weavers often mix the silk with wool, and dye with mineral dye.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The moth lives in harmony with the Fandronde trees, eating their leaves as caterpillars, and then helping to pollinate their flowars as moths. The Springborne birds depend on the moths as their primary foodsource as well as the Götfish and even the people of the valley find them nutritious and add them to food and medicine.

Conservation Status
The Maia Moth is currently only found in Corre’nas Verai. Sickness and bad climate killed off other populations, but the people of the valley ensure that the moth population is protected.
