Spirit Caller

History

In the beginning, the teiresi people were tolerant of all types of people, and even various magics were accepted if they helped the populace survive. However, a few decades ago, there was a rash of darker uses of blood magic, spiteful individuals using it to call forth demons who were immune to the protection effects of the brightroads. These red-eyed casters were chased out of the cities, or executed, but the fear of such magic became immediately branded as evil.
By unfortunate coincidence, most of the offenders had also been dark elves, using their innate advantages in the dark to their advantage. This put a stain on the subrace that could not be washed away by mere punishment to the offenders. The priests and nobles began using light magic to trick the biology of newborn elves to believe they were born under the sun’s light, rather than the moon’s; causing the newborns to become light elves instead of dark elves.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

“Summoning celestials is a sacrifice to a good cause!”
— Anonymous spirit caller

The teiresi people revere their magic and culture, but there are some aspects that do not sit quite as well with all residents. The outlawing of blood magic is seen as the outlawing of a potential resource that could help them fight off the demonic hordes. Not all summoning is done with ill intent, and not all red-eyes are demon worshippers. Summoning benevolent celestials also requires a small amount of blood to make the gateway, and the celestial are eternally very eager to aid and protect people.
Likewise, the spirit callers believe that altering an elf’s birth is blasphemous. Instead of using light magic to trick the child’s natural traits to favor the sun, they should allow those born at night to reflect the night sky. The belief of the general populace is that the disadvantages of being a dark elf outweigh the benefits, in their demon-infested nights. The ability to see in darkness is not worth the cost of being blinded by the sun.
Spirit callers believe that dark elves can find uses for their unique characteristics to be hard working members of society, just at a different time then their light elf brethren. Twilight and night are often less protected, relying on the wardstone and brightroads; when it is a time these elves could thrive.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

“Elves born during the night should be allowed to reflect as such.”
— Anonymous spirit caller
Due to their beliefs, it is not uncommon for spirit callers to offer sanctuary to carrying elven mothers who believe their child will be born at night, and do not want the child’s natural traits disrupted. There is an underground network within any city to reach midwives to help with delivery.

This is a really cool article! I love the idea of altering their biology through magic, I think it's a really neat idea. Does using magic to make them light elves have any negative effects later in life?

I have not finished the info on the elves, but the magic merely tricks the infant into thinking its day outside instead of night. They have the same limitations and strengths of a natural light elf.   They have strong light magic, have excellent eyesight during the day but are essentially blind at night without a torch. They cannot see by moonlight unless its a full moon [and even then another light source is needed for any details]   Likewise, a dark elf can see perfectly fine in the dark even when there is no moon, but they can barely see at all past the glare of sunlight in the day.
