Rift Wars
The Conflict
Prelude
Who started the conflict is unclear, but the idea of it was in the thoughts of all three cities. It is generally accepted that Vi-Ingris, the city of War, was likely the first to actually march upon the others. Determined to expand their reach by claiming the other wardstone cities, the soldiers of War were armed but lightly armored to increase their swiftness overland. Having to move around the wider chasms, they had to travel light and put a lot of effort into keeping themselves safe through the nights.
Conditions
Over the years of the conflict, many attempts were made by all three cities. The weather was not often considered, due to the relative stability of the dry season. In the first years, the soldiers would only march during the dry season, but as the impatience for victory grew, caution faded. Many were lost to this lack of proper awareness of the weather.
When rains did arrive, it would sometimes hit with the soldiers unawares and force them to retreat, or risk being caught out in the dark by demons or washed into the chasms by the rivers that formed from the torrential rains.

The Engagement
Conflicts varied based on when the opposing force was noticed. If they were seen at a distance, then the city gates would close and be much more difficult to engage as the citizens just left the oncoming night to deal with the problem.
Some more clever captains would send their troops to the city in small groups, pretending to be returning from a hunt or gathering mission. Once the troop was within the city walls, they would strike and attempt to shut down the city’s defense or open the gates for a larger force. These attacks were more bloody, but ultimately unsuccessful due to numbers and unknown infrastructure being against the invaders.
On occasion, troops would encounter each other in the open land between cities, sometimes headed toward the same city to attack. There was no truce in these cases, since their goals were the same but with opposite outcomes. The two forces would fight until one, or both, were forced to retreat.
It was a bloody conflict with very little progress for anyone involved.
