Great Spirits

Basic Information

Anatomy

Every spirit is unique in form, with little that makes them appear as a like-species to each other. Their forms reflect their virtue or sin, as well as humanoids or beasts their core values resemble.

Celestials

Celestials tend to be pale in color, with aspects that appear aesthetically pleasing and well proportioned, showing their benevolent nature. There are some that lean toward the goodness of new life, giving them a more animal appearance that the young find unthreatening and cute. Some are diplomacy inclined, and resemble the shape of sentient humanoid races, with more subtle wild features.
During the time of the veil between worlds being thin, however, the primary celestial called or encountered tend to be those who seek to push back the demonic hordes. These celestials are the most varied, being beast and humanoid in equal numbers and all wearing armor and armed with various weapons made of light. These accessories are part of their bodies, and cannot be removed without disappearing like a snuffed out candlelight.

Demons

Demons are heavily animalistic in appearance, with a rare few recorded to appear human-like. Their bodies are more fluid then the celestials, as their innate nature of chaos causes them to alternate between a few slightly different shapes at random.

Growth Rate & Stages

Spirits are not born, they have no stages that can be called ‘young’ or ‘adolescent’. Instead, they appear in their forms as adult creatures. Should they form agreements with mortal summoners, their power can increase, making their physical form more elaborate over the eons.

Spirit Lords

Rarely, spirits that have gathered enough power undergo a change, emerging in a new shape, with strength and power that surpasses their kin by a wide margin. These are called Celestial Lords, and Demon Lords, respectively.
The harinae tribes believe the mortal soul is composed of a trapped demon and celestial, and the mortal can cause either aspect to weaken or strengthen by their actions. If a mortal is so devout to goodness or evil that they become a paragon of virtues or sins, when they die their dual spirit will emerge as a single Lord of the alignment.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Spirits do not require food or water, instead using the sun’s light or the shadows’ darkness to fuel their physical forms. This feast on light and dark leads to the characteristic celestials’ glow and the demon’s dark miasma.

Behaviour

Celestials

Celestials are known for being benevolent, and tolerant of mortals and their minor flaws. They are quite happy to aid others in any way they can, and only ask that their aid be repaid in their summoner also doing good deeds for those around them. Their patience is said to be endless, but they will not tolerate sin in their presence, and will take whatever steps they believe necessary to stop it.

Demons

Demons are viewed as mindless in their drive for destruction and death, without patience or capability for reason. While it is true that demons have significantly reduced capabilities for patience, those that hone such a skill are legendary for their deadly intent and forethought.
It is wise to never trust a demon’s aid, for their payment is often either the blood and soul of their summoner or those of many others, depending upon their scale of power. Even when the payment is made, the demon may still turn on their summoner if their demands are not suitably wicked to feed the demon’s hunger for carnage.
