The Lost city

Origin of the horrific experiments on a Great Spirit, which caused the worlds guarding veil to temporary lift and consume this city. Corrupting it and creating a toxic ruined landscape.

Wandering through the city as a mortal is a dangerous endeavour not only due to the lingering toxic energy but also because of the broken veil shards in the atmosphere.

Despite no sound echoing through it's streets, no whisper, no cry and not even the wind daring to play it's soft melody within the cities confines, it is not empty as one might suspect.
The lost souls of it's former inhabitants still reside here till this day, living in animated objects, moving them around like living creatures and even forming something loosely assembling a culture.

History

The Fall

Many cycles ago it was here where several species launched a breakthrough research regarding the great spirits. Their goal was to prolong the era of strive for eternity and avoid ever entering the era of dream again. They found out the dream is started by the great spirit falling asleep, thus weakening the barrier they upheld to keep the world of Luveri save. The researchers idea was to forcefully keep the spirit awake. For some time this worked and no era of dream came to be. However the spirit reached a breaking point and the barrier lost it's strength.. and so the barrier shattered locally, enveloping the entire city in it. The struggle didn't last long as natures energy itself was sucked out of our world into, what lies in between.

The uprising

It was believed that everyone in the city and it's surrounding had been killed by the catastrophe as no sign of live or refugees headed towards the other cities and nations. The affected area was also declared too dangerous to explore so it took several decades to truly unravel what happened after the fall.

When a team of researchers was finally sent, they did not expect what they found. The city was not only inhabited it was... thriving. At that time it was believed that wandering souls were not able to interact with their environment and simply floated, lost in their memories. Thus it shouldn't be possible but somehow the wandering souls did not only remain in our world in masses but they also managed to possess objects. Especially manlike objects were popular, let it be dolls, armour, scarecrows or statues but tables, shovels and all sorts of things were moving around as well.

Up to this date it is by far the largest amount of wandering souls detected and it sent shockwaves throughout the institutions of knowledge. It created a renewed interest in the study regarding death and what comes after.

What surprised and astonished the research team the most however was not the possession of object but that the souls were, at least to some degree, aware of their predicament and their surrounding. Those who had possessed suitable objects worked on creating more for the other souls to switch into something more fitting. They had demolished their former hiarchy and nobility and ended up with something more akin to an anarchy system, with a few souls keeping some remains order.

While the cities inhabitants did not welcome outsiders, they also didn't straight up kill them and allowed them to stay temporarily. They even guided the research team towards the city borders, helping them to find the safest route through the veil shard remains. Beside this gesture of good will however they refused to answer any questions as to how they possess objects and how they 'survived'.

One of the leading souls parting words to the research team were the following:
"This place belongs to no mortal creature anymore. Leave now and never return. Your curiosity destroyed our home once already and we will make sure it won't happen again."
